Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, Wollega University, language: English, abstract: This research study assesses the factors that affect the self-employment of the persons with disabilities in Urban Areas of East Wollega Zone and analses gender disparities on participation of the households in income generating activities and household income. A simple random sampling of the persons with disabilities is therefore made from all the six sub cities, under Nekemte town, proportional to their size in each sub city. A total of 121 persons with disabilities are drawn and analysed using both descriptive and econometric analysis. The study reveals that 25.62 percent of persons with disabilities are engaged in income generating activities equally with other healthy (active) citizens of the people in the area. The use of credit, the social capital and better health condition are variables identified in significantly influencing their participation in income generating activities. The proportion of participation of female persons with disabilities is higher as compared to male counterpart. There is discrepancy in annual income of female heads compared to male headed. At the same time the study indicates that a significant number, 30.58 percent, still require a continuous support (health, food, sheltering, clothing, and so on) from any source to cope up with the highly competitive living condition. The study recommends support on enhancing their educational level through training, health condition and provision of credit to increase their engagement in income generating activities for the healthy (able to work) persons; and provision of a continuous assistance for the remaining households that are in bad health condition.

Case Study from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: -, , course: Business, language: English, abstract: The objective of this study is to show the overall development trends and the challenges encountering the multi-purpose cooperatives (MPCs). To do so, research methodology employed was descriptive, which involved both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Data were collected from the sample through cross-sectional survey from 210 respondents. Besides, 16 key informants and three FGDs were considered in the assessment. The instruments used were questionnaires, FGDs, in depth interviews, observation and document review. Both probability and non-probability sampling techniques were applied. Data analyses were done using descriptive statistics. The result of the study shows that the average rate of growth of members in sample MPCs is 19% as calculated from 2016-2018 and 79.3% from their formation period. The capital of the sample MPCs increased from 305,081 to 9.3 million and their profit was nearly 1.5 million ETB. Of the multifaceted services they provide, marketing agricultural inputs accounts for the great proportions. In general, the sample MPCs are contributing somewhat to the economic development of the MPCs. However, their performance is not as expected due to major problems identified: lack of professional managers, devoted management committees, limited capital base; weak horizontal and vertical linkages, low members’ participation, insufficient dividend, lack of diversified activities; limited awareness, inadequate infrastructure, low stakeholders’ participation, lack of adequate credit facilities and other necessary technical supports are among hitches to be tackled.

Community seed banks first appeared towards the end of the 1980s, established with the support of international and national non-governmental organizations. This book is the first to provide a global review of their development and includes a wide range of case studies. Countries that pioneered various types of community seed banks include Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Zimbabwe. In the North, a particular type of community seed bank emerged known as a seed-savers network. Such networks were first established in Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA before spreading to other countries. Over time, the number and diversity of seed banks has grown. In Nepal, for example, there are now more than 100 self-described community seed banks whose functions range from pure conservation to commercial seed production. In Brazil, community seed banks operate in various regions of the country. Surprisingly, despite 25 years of history and the rapid growth in number, organizational diversity and geographical coverage of community seed banks, recognition of their roles and contributions has remained scanty. The book reviews their history, evolution, experiences, successes and failures (and reasons why), challenges and prospects. It fills a significant gap in the literature on agricultural biodiversity and conservation, and their contribution to food sovereignty and security.

In MGNREGA program Grama panchayat plays an important role in monitoring, executing and implementing the scheme as per guidelines issued by the government of Karnataka. Further Gram Panchayat conducts Gramasabha, prepares the work plan, Job card registration for the unskilled job seekers in the Panchyat limits, issuing job card, creating awareness for work demand, allocating work to job card holder, payment of wages and maintaining relevant records. In this study, the standard questionnaire was used to collect the primary information from the respondents of the HARTI village in Gadag District. The respondents were the job card holders issued the Gram panchayat and have worked at least once under the MGNREGA program in the HARTI village panchayat. The study was concluded with the significant impact of MGNREGA program on improvement of socio-economic status of the unskilled workers in the village and also contributed to the non- migration of village unskilled workers to urban areas.

The purpose of this study is to assess police women’s empowerment in Ethiopia with emphasis on Oromia regional state police commission. More specifically, it aimed to assess factors affecting police women’s empowerment to assume a leadership position. That is aimed to examine gender difference in decision making position. To this end, a sample of 160 police women respondents were drawn from the region’s police. In order to determine the sample size probability simple random sampling method was employed. Then next, self- administered questionnaires and interview guides were used to gather data. The data were fed into SPSS version 20.0 followed by analysis and interpretation using descriptive statistics. Law enforcement and order maintenance are generally viewed as the two main duties of the police force. In addition to these two duties, the police are also frequently requested by the public to deliver social services. As one of the law enforcement statutory service teams, the police are expected to provide immediate aid and care to the public along with compulsory, regulatory, control, and defense practices. Provision of public services is one of the most significant roles of the contemporary police. Studies have shown that the police spend most of their time providing police services to the public. Based on the 2007 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) report in the United States, the primary function of one-fifth of the police agencies was search and rescue. Specifically, nearly 60 percent of police officers undertook animal control tasks, nearly one-sixth of police agencies were responsible for providing emergency and medical services and carry out civil defense functions, and about one-tenth of police agencies provided fire prevention services.
