The present volume examines Relevance Theory, one of the most influential pragmatic approaches to communication rooted in human cognition, by testing both its internal coherence and its applicability to such forms of communication as translation and literature. Part I addresses a wide range of issues which, over recent years, have been of central interest to pragmatists, including relevance theorists, but may well appeal to readers less familiar with pragmatic theory. The papers discuss selected pragmatic phenomena as diverse as conversational humour, politeness, echoicity, garden-path utterances, the explicit-implicit distinction and the role of inferential processes in communication, with a view to applying, evaluating and revisiting the basic tenets of Relevance Theory. Part II is devoted to various aspects of translation. The papers test the applicability of Relevance Theory, depending on the subject, the genre and the aim of the given translation. Most of the articles analyse specific areas of translation practice, for example the translation of popular science, legal texts, film and fiction. A collection of papers on varied linguistic and cultural phenomena, this book will be a valuable resource for scholars and students of pragmatics (including cognitive and experimental pragmatics), semantics, sociolinguistics and Translation Studies.

An element common to all the articles collected here is the attempt to make parallel use of sources from different cultures - Biblical and Talmudic Hebrew, Greek and Latin, Arabic and Judaeo-Arabic - comparing these different but complementary sources in the investigation of topics in Jewish and Arabic history. In the first studies Professor Gil deals primarily with the Roman and Byzantine periods, elucidating how a Biblical term was understood, the historical significance of passages from the Mishna, and the origins of the Book of Enoch. The next group is concerned with the history of early Islam, during the years in which the Prophet Muhammad lived and worked, and later traditions of this period. The final studies are based specifically on sources from the Cairo Geniza, and examine a term of Greek origin and questions of taxation and commerce.

This book concerns the philosophical analysis of modal sentences. David Lewis’ Modal Translation Scheme "translates" sentences of quantified modal logic into sentences of predicate logic supplemented by counterpart theory. A number of theoretical advantages are thereby secured. One component of the translation scheme makes reference to non-actual but possible worlds i.e. the primitive predicate “at a world(s), w”. The author addresses the problem of advanced modal sentences which threaten this predicate and so the ability of genuine realism to secure the aforementioned theoretical benefits. The problem of advanced modal sentences is a relatively new field of philosophical research. This ground-breaking book will primarily be of interest to researchers in modality, particularly those working in this field.

This volume provides a unique open inter-disciplinary dialogue across the Humanities and Social Sciences to further our understanding of the phenomenon of regions and regionalism in a globalized world both at the theoretical and empirical levels. What comprises a region? What are the different regional dynamic processes that take place? What is the relationship between the regional and the global? What role does identity building play? Bringing together scholars from various disciplines within and across the Social Sciences and the Humanities to reflect on these questions, the book explores how regions are imagined, constructed, understood, and explained in different academic disciplines. Each chapter addresses these common questions and uses its own disciplinary lenses to answer them. In addition, the volume offers interesting reflections on the academic borders constructed in the study of regions, thus demonstrating the importance of obtaining insights from both social scientists and humanities scholars in order to better understand the relevance of regions in a complex and globalized world. An important work for scholars and postgraduate students in many fields, including political science, international relations, sociology, economics, geography, history and literature, as well as for those interested in regionalism and area studies.

What has Newman to say today, not just to Christians, but to those shapers of public opinion in education and the media for whom Christianity is no longer a point of reference, or to those for whom all religion is merely a matter of personal and subjective “opinion”? This is the central question of this volume. As it shows, Newman challenges us to think in an integrated way, “connecting” different areas of thought and experience. He invites us to reflect on the nature of the human “person” and the “self”, on the nature of conscience and its role in contemporary political life, and on the relationship between the individual and the community. The contributions here show that Newman challenges us to examine the relationships between different academic disciplines in the quest for a “connected view or grasp” of things. He invites us to see faith as not just a question of “believing”, but also as a quest for a personal, living relationship. His thought throws fresh light on the nature of inter-religious dialogue and contemporary evangelism.

This book reflects on the significance of duties in creating an egalitarian society by collating and contextualizing the relevant literature. It particularly focuses on an appreciation of Gandhi’s views on duty to showcase how they remain pertinent to create a cohesive, responsible and value-based society in the present right-dominated world. A viable solution to the current real world problems could be found in exploring the philosophy on duties and the book provides relevant literature in this regard. It undertakes jurisprudential analysis of duty in a rights-dominated world, identifying the gaps in realising the potential of duty to address the critical issues of the present times. It argues that enforcement of rights depends heavily on the observance of duties and proposes coherence in right-duty relationship. Gandhian thought on duty recognises duty as a precursor to rights and emphasises that the observance of duties guarantees the enforcement of rights. The relevance of duties and Gandhian thoughts on the same is not restricted to India but transcends borders with profound appeal. Gandhian thoughts have become even more relevant in the current times to examine the situation of COVID-19 pandemic, racial discrimination (BLM), environmental crises, digital divide, health care and medical care crises, refugee and migrant labour problems and it can offer promising solutions based on the nuances of social solidarity, self realisation of duties/responsibilities, local governance, compassion and humanity.

Governments are struggling to respond the needs of the people. The media have lost their traditional equidistance. The public impression of competence, and the trust it engenders, has tilted in favor of corporations putting pressure on them to proactively engage. The Influence, Relevance & Growth (IRG) system based on 10 quantitative parameters offers corporations a new operating model to adapt to a societal context in which policymakers need to be continuously and deeply informed about complex, technologically intensive, and ethically charged issues. This book is designed to help CEOs and top management align companies and prepare business students for a more realistic perspective of society and how the corporate world can compensate for the overshadowing primacy of politics.
