In a time of rapid climate change and species extinction, what role have the world’s religions played in ameliorating—or causing—the crisis we now face? Religion in general, and Christianity in particular, appears to bear a disproportionate burden for creating humankind’s exploitative attitudes toward nature through unearthly theologies that divorce human beings and their spiritual yearnings from their natural origins. In this regard, Christianity has become an otherworldly religion that views the natural world as “fallen,” as empty of signs of God’s presence. And yet, buried deep within the Christian tradition are startling portrayals of God as the beaked and feathered Holy Spirit – the “animal God,” as it were, of historic Christian witness. Through biblical readings, historical theology, continental philosophy, and personal stories of sacred nature, this book recovers the model of God in Christianity as a creaturely, avian being who signals the presence of spirit in everything, human and more-than-human alike. Mark Wallace’s recovery of the bird-God of the Bible signals a deep grounding of faith in the natural world. The moral implications of nature-based Christianity are profound. All life is deserving of humans’ care and protection insofar as the world is envisioned as alive with sacred animals, plants, and landscapes. From the perspective of Christian animism, the Earth is the holy place that God made and that humankind is enjoined to watch over and cherish in like manner. Saving the environment, then, is not a political issue on the left or the right of the ideological spectrum, but, rather, an innermost passion shared by all people of faith and good will in a world damaged by anthropogenic warming, massive species extinction, and the loss of arable land, potable water, and breathable air. To Wallace, this passion is inviolable and flows directly from the heart of Christian teaching that God is a carnal, fleshy reality who is promiscuously incarnated within all things, making the whole world a sacred embodiment of God’s presence, and worthy of our affectionate concern. This beautifully and accessibly written book shows that “Christian animism” is not a strange oxymoron, but Christianity’s natural habitat. Challenging traditional Christianity’s self-definition as an other-worldly religion, Wallace paves the way for a new Earth-loving spirituality grounded in the ancient image of an animal God.

From best-selling author and theologian R. T. Kendall... Will you continue to sit back and take sides? This book will help you unite the power of the Holy Spirit with the knowledge of God's Word, and anticipate a last-days revival because of this union. In October 1992 while pastoring Westminster Chapel in London, England, R. T. Kendall organized a conference around a series of sermons prophetically describing what God may have in store for His people in these last days. The series proclaimed an outpouring much deeper than anything we have ever experienced—an awakening not based on feelings or emotions but inspired through the irrevocable truth of God's Word, fulfilled through the conviction and direction of the Holy Spirit. In Word and Spirit best-selling author and theologian R. T. Kendall challenges your traditions, emotions, convictions, and maybe even your faith. Kendall shares his vision of the future—of a holy unity of the Word and the Spirit that leads to a last-days revival. There are those who live their spiritual lives by biblical explanation only. Meanwhile, others base their theological dispositions on “signs and wonders” characterized by the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement. In this exciting and controversial book R. T. revives his original messages, adding new insights into what they mean for us today and revealing everything we need to know about the coming move of God. Seek honor and praise from God and not people. This book will help you to stop being motivated by the approval of others and instead start living for the validation that comes from God alone. Respected author and theologian R. T. Kendall shares a profound revelation of the meaning of John 5:44, the scripture that has guided his life for more than sixty years. Early in his ministry the wise counsel of two mentors brought this scripture to light, and he has determined to live by it ever since. Now he passes on the same wise counsel to his readers. In For an Audience of One, Kendall explores what it means to truly live for Christ alone. Many Christians believe in God and claim that Jesus is their Lord and Savior, but sadly their actions betray them. They are more concerned about the approval of people. They avoid truly following God's leading or taking a bold stand for righteousness if they fear they might lose a friend. Because they are more worried about what people think than what God thinks, they miss out on what God is doing. It's time to learn what a life truly surrendered to God—and God alone—looks like. Readers can live the life He has purposed for them! They can stop being motivated by fear of others and addicted to their approval. For an Audience of One shows readers how to start living for the honor and praise that comes from God alone! Also Available in Spanish ISBN: 978-1-62999-313-3 OTHER BOOKS BY R. T.
