Jennifer Wright was born at St Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, MA, and there she was diagnosed with a Hemangioma. As she grew, the Hemangioma spread down the left side of her face leaving her with a massive birth defect. After six constructive plastic surgeries her image improved drastically, and she became more comfortable with her self appearance. At the age of seventeen she almost died in Lisbon Portugal, and was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Ever since then, she defeated the small flares that came her way. In 2005, she had another major flare triggering her heart, and kidneys leading her to Congestive Heart failure and Renal Failure. She had been on dialysis for a year, and was on a transplant list. However, by a miracle of God her kidneys started functioning again. Despite all the suffering she has undergone, she learned that no one should ever give up on their dreams, or bow down when illness occurs. There is always a way out, or a way to make things better. If you believe in yourself; all your dreams can come true. Just one smile can cure so much, if you just believe.

This book presents a method for replicating natural butterfly wing scales using a variety of metals for state-of-the-art applications requiring high surface-enhancement properties. During the past decade, three dimensional (3D) sub-micrometer structures have attracted considerable attention for optical applications. These 3D subwavelength metallic structures are, however, difficult to prepare. By contrast, the 3D superstructures of butterfly wing scales, with more than 175 000 morphologies, are efficiently engineered by nature. Natural butterfly wing scales feature 3D sub-micrometer structures that are superior to many human designs in terms of structural complexity, reproducibility, and cost. Such natural wealth offers a versatile chemical route via the replication of these structures into functional metals. A single versatile chemical route can be used to produce butterfly scales in seven different metals. These synthesized structures have the potential for catalytic (Au, Pt, Pd), thermal (Ag, Au, Cu), electrical (Au, Cu, Ag), magnetic (Co, Ni), and optical (Au, Ag, Cu) applications. Plasmon-active Au, Cu, Ag butterfly scales have exhibited excellent properties in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The Au scales as SERS substrates have ten times the analyte detection sensitivity and are one-tenth the cost of their human-designed commercial counterparts (KlariteTM). Preliminary mechanisms of these surface-enhancement phenomena are also reviewed.

Heterogeneous catalysis provides the backbone of the world's chemical and oil industries. The innate complexity of practical catalytic systems suggests that useful progress should be achievable by investigating key aspects of catalysis by experimental studies on idealised model systems. Thin films and supported clusters are two promising types of model system that can be used for this purpose, since they mimic important aspects of the properties of practical dispersed catalysts.
