Excerpt from Aircraft in War and Peace In this short book I have attempted to convey, in plain non-technical language, a general idea of the conditions under which aircraft is playing its part in the War, and also to indicate the chief directions in which it is developing. To the general public the War has revealed, in a startling manner, the wonderful potentialities which aircraft, and aeroplanes in particular, possess as weapons of war. But although there is at last plenty of enthusiasm for Aviation, there is still very little real knowledge of the vast possibilities which it offers. And, if we are to have an air force as proportionately powerful as our Navy is to-day - and it is absolutely essential that we should - a better and wider understanding will be most necessary. Excerpt from Aviation in Peace and War Our nation as a whole has been educated, owing to its geographical situation and by tra dition, to interest itself in the broader aspects of marine policy and development. It 'requires to take the same interest in aviation, a comparatively new subject, unhampered to a great extent by preconceived notions and therefore offering greater scope for individual thought. The following 1sketch 1 has been written in the hope that some of those who read it may be inspired to study aviation in one or other of its branches, whether from the historical, technical, strategical, or commercial point of view. Any opinions e pressed are, of course, my own-and not official. I propose first briefly to trace the history of aviation from its beginnings to the outbreak of war; next to describe the evolution of aircraft and of air strategy during the war; and last to estimate the present position and to look into the future. Excerpt from Aircraft: Its Development in War and Peace and Its Commercial Future The object of this book is to explain the fundamental principles of aeronautics and to point out the historic development of both the heavier-than-air and the lighter-than-air craft. The treatment is simple. Tech nical phrases have been avoided wherever possible. Emphasis has been laid on the changes in the design or construction of aeroplanes and dirigibles, which show the evolution of flight and aircraft from early experi ments with balloons and gliders to the transatlantic flights of the N 0-4, the Vickers Vimy Bomber, and the R-34. Only those things have been singled out which indicated a step forward in the science of aero nautics. Emphasis is placed upon the commercial accomplishments of the aeroplane and the dirigible, and many of the present uses and future possibilities of aircraft as a commercial vehicle have been pointed out. Excerpt from Aircraft in War Chevalier Bayard's denunciation, many centuries ago, of the then newly invented musket - an invention of a purely destructive character and obviously less adapted than the aeroplane for use in peace. The introduction of steam transport by land and sea three-quarters of a century ago must have aroused similar misgivings in conservative minds, which could not see how civilisa tion would be benefited by the discovery of the new means of travel. And, if we are to have an air force as proportionately powerful as our Navy is to-day—and it is absolutely essential that we should—a better and wider understanding will be most necessary. Today, for instance, people do not fully realise that aeroplanes, as well as airships, are still in their infancy, in spite of the extraordinary achievements which they have accomplished. Then, again, aircraft is at present regarded as being almost entirely for use in warfare, although, as a matter of fact, it will be of the utmost value for civil purposes in times of peace. The author does not pretend that book is in any way complete. Indeed, to attempt to be complete on the subject of Aviation is inevitably to be incomplete, so swiftly does it progress. His intention has been to make a brief survey of Aviation in its present-day position, and to show how important it is that in future it should receive a great deal more attention than hitherto.

Aviation in Peace and War by Frederick Hugh Sykes Since the earliest communities of human beings first struggled for supremacy and protection, the principles of warfare have remained unchanged. New methods have been evolved and adopted with the progress of science, but no discovery, save perhaps that of gunpowder, has done so much in so short a time to revolutionize the conduct of war as aviation, the youngest, yet destined perhaps to be the most effective fighting-arm. Yet to-day we are only on the threshold of our knowledge, and, striking as was the impetus given to every branch of aeronautics during the four years of war, its future power can only dimly be seen. We may indeed feel anxious about this great addition of aviation to the destructive power of modern scientific warfare. Bearing its terrors in mind, we may even impotently seek to check its advance, but the appeal of flying is too deep, its elimination is now impossible, and granted that war is inevitable, it must be accepted for good or ill We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Excerpt from Aircraft in the Great War: A Record and Study The co-operation of aeroplanes with artillery, in directing the fire of long-range guns, has proved extraordinarily effective, influencing operations almost as much as has the scouting by air. But it is scarcely probable that such success will be obtained in future wars. The aviator, when range-finding, is obliged to haunt one definite section of the air; and this renders him susceptible to attack from hostile craft. Even in this war, in its later stages, aerial rangefinders were interfered with seriously. In campaigns of the future, unless one flying corps can obtain supremacy in the air, its range-finding machines will be harassed constantly by the enemy's fighting craft.
