The idea of leaving behind me a wife and eight little girls without a protector, was in itself most distressing, but when to this was added the expectation of an addition to the number which might occur at any hour, I was placed in a most embarrassing dilemma. I came to the conclusion that I would not leave home before the expected event occurred, as no consideration of duty or honor demanded such a sacrifice. I doubt if any other soldier answered the call leaving a wife in bed and a baby eight hours old.
