Excerpt from Zion's Pilgrim IT was not until that I had passed a very con siderable portion of time in the life of man, that I felt the full conviction' of my being but a stranger and a pilgrim upon the earth. And' it becomes even now, one of the most astonish ing circumstances, in the new view of things which are continually Opening before me, that there should have been so much iglnorance in my mind by nature, on a subject whic in itself, ap pears so exceedingly plain and evident. Not that I was altogether void of apprehension, that the present life formed a bounded prospect. But yet my ideas were like those of the great mass of unawakened characters, who believe as though they believed not; and who, though ready enough to confess in the general, that man is but a dying creature, yet in the particular instance, as it concerns themselves, live as though they never thought to die. Although this book was written more than 300 years ago, The Pilgrim's Progress continues to be reprinted and gain new readers throughout the years. It has also been published in no less than 200 languages and is widely read the world over, so much so that it is said to be second to the Bible in terms of readership. The author sails through his narrative without dividing it into chapters. Instead, he separates his saga into 2 parts. He begins with a poetic Apology before taking readers to the first-person account of Christian, the Pilgrim and main protagonist of this Christian-themed story. The Pilgrim Christian's experience is the highlight of the first part of the book. The second part reveals the experiences of Christian's wife, Christiana, as well as his four sons. In part I, they did not accompany Christian on his pilgrimage as they could not be persuaded to do so. In part II, they decide to go through the same route that Christian took and went through various difficulties unique to them. The other characters in the book are named after certain personality attributes. Obstinate, Formalist, Hopeful, and Faithful are just some of them. In addition, some settings and places are named after Biblical locations, such as Mount Zion and Mount Sinai. This particular 1910 edition comes with beautiful monochromatic and highly detailed illustrations by Frank C. Pape. Christian readers definitely will enjoy reading and learning from this allegorical story more with the inclusion of Pape's images.
