DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Transform your beachcombing finds into charming reminders of summer Elyse Major has created a second charming collection of the easy-to-make projects that she calls “tinkered treasures”. Using items from the seashore, vacation essentials, and things you will already have in your home, she has recreated the feeling of summer in these beautiful souvenirs of days spent by the ocean. Mermaids made from laundry pins, shell-topped jars, a beach cottage built from craft sticks, or a windchime constructed from sticks and shells, are just some of the unique ideas to help you keep your happy summer memories alive throughout the year. Many of the projects use recycled materials, and “tinkering” requires no specialist tools, equipment or techniques—anyone can do it! As well as the 35 projects, there are “Fancy This” alternatives for many of the items, substituting different materials or changing the colors for a different look.

Let the images captured in Treasures from the Tide bring you back to a simpler time and the joy of discovery. This unique photo keepsake celebrates the simple beauty of found objects. Beaches remind us of simple pleasures—swimming in the surf, building sand castles, and collecting smooth, opalescent beach glass. These once man-made objects, perhaps glass bottles or insulators, were broken, rolled and tumbled by the waves, and smoothed into something completely different, something—almost—natural again. Beach glass is found art. Why we take such pleasure in these bits and pieces of manufactured materials reclaimed by nature may be something to contemplate while enjoying Treasures from the Tide—the author surely has, and she conveys that pleasure in playful, organic sculptures that come to life in the interplay of colors and shapes and their interaction with the sand and surf they came from. The sense of a moment in time captured in these photos is like an insect captured in amber, and, in this book, beach glass becomes just as precious.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK →The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

Elyse Major has created over 35 projects, using objects that can easily be found or that you might already have. She refers to these transformations as 'tinkering' as it perfectly describes her style of embellishing, repurposing and altering things without the need for any specialist tools and equipment or techniques. Tinkering is not about constructing - it's about appreciating the flaws but seeing the potential in little details. Each craft project in this book is designed for complete beginners - there are no particular skills involved. Measuring often gives way to estimating and many of the simple techniques are repeated from project to project. The book shows how to tinker all sorts of household and craft items to create a range of gorgeous gifts, treasures and trinkets, from clothespin dolls and tiny picture frames to favour baskets, bunting, fabric garlands, bookmarks and more. If you are new to crafting, have no fear because simple instructions along with a tools and techniques section are provided. All the projects in this book can be adapted to your own tastes - with a simple colour or pattern change you can create items to suit any style or home.
