By 1849, parts of six towns had been formed from the original settlement and yet Yarmouth still prospered due to the many mills and shipyards clustered around its sheltered harbor. The mansions of sea captains and merchants arose along its elm-shaded streets. When shipbuilding and other key industries declined, the town turned to its scenic islands and peninsulas to attract cottagers and other tourists to a leisurely world of clambakes and sailing parties. Yarmouth explores this fascinating coastal town in more than two hundred rare photographs. Haunting images, many of which have never been published, portray employees working in the shipyards and factories while the mill owners entertain in their gardens. The tranquility of life in Victorian cottages by the sea contrasts sharply with the drama of floods, fires, and train wrecks. Fourth of July celebrations appear raucous in comparison with the somber parades of Civil War veterans.

Established as a large plantation in 1680, five towns grew and separated from the original settlement over the next 170 years, leaving behind a small rural community with two distinct villages. Farming and lumber-related industries dominated the life of residents until World War II. Church, school, and numerous social groups were the sources of entertainment when daily chores were done. North Yarmouth once boasted a hotel, a creamery, a library, a chinchilla ranch, and carriage makers. The town has grown and thrived over the last few decades, but still carefully preserves its important heritage. Around North Yarmouth illustrates the vibrant interwoven history of this town and the surrounding communities. Longtime residents with roots spanning many generations helped create this volume by sharing their cherished historic photographs and fascinating oral histories.

From shore whaling, fishing, and boatbuilding to sailing, salt making, and other maritime pursuits, almost everyone dealt with the ocean. A 160-acre Indian reservation existed until a smallpox epidemic in the 1770s. Later, a substantial Friends community (Quakers) grew in South Yarmouth. Yarmouth slowly leaned toward tourism after the Civil War, with railroads providing the transportation. Automobiles created even more tourism. People no longer stayed for the summer but could now spend just a night or two. Restaurants, dance halls, and cabins changed the landscape. There was little growth during the Depression; however, it was explosive in the years following World War II. Townspeople grudgingly adapted to these changes. The one constant has been the Bass River and its influence on the town.
