This remarkable book provides an account of the origins of various foreign Orders of Knighthood, especially those conferred upon British subjects, and such recipients are listed. A separate section is devoted to honorary sword and plate awards by the Patriotic Fund Institution of Great Britain for gallant conduct, together with relevant citations, and the value of each in pounds sterling. These were for deeds performed during the first decade of the 19th Century during the Napoleonic Wars. A most interesting and historic piece of work, dedicated to Sir Robert Peel.

`Sheds considerable new light on the nature, development and functions of the orders in a key phase of their history, and goes a long way to explaining how such archaic institutions could flourish in a culture that is commonly thought anti-traditional and especially hostile to the "middle ages"'. Professor JONATHAN BOULTON, University of Notre Dame. This is the first comprehensive study to set the British orders of knighthood properly into the context of the honours system - by analysing their political, social and cultural functions from the Restoration of the monarchy to the end of George II's reign. It examines the revival of the Order of the Garter and the proposals to establish the Orders of the Royal Oak and the Esquires of the Martyred King at the Restoration, the foundation (1687) and the revival (1703-4) of the Order of the Thistle as well as the foundation of the Order of the Bath (1725). It establishes just how central a part the orders played in the British high political life and its comprehensive and multidimensional approach carefully contrasts the idealistic discourse of virtue and honour to the real workings of the honours system; it also makes the case for the 'Chivalric Enlightenment'. The 'orders over the water', the Garter and the Thistle conferred by the Jacobite claimants, are discussed for the first time in the context of the established British honours system. Overall, the comparison between the socially very restricted British and the increasingly meritocratic Continental orders highlights the isolation of the British honours system from the European tendencies.

Orders of Knighthood are the most exclusive and prestigious institutions in the world. Originally the preserve of royalty and aristocracy, they now include amongst their membership tycoons such as Rupert Murdoch, entertainers (Sir Mick Jagger, for example) and world leaders (Nelson Mandela). Burke's Peerage and Gentry have now produced a major new study of the extant orders of knighthood and merit of every state, the result of the collaboration of many of the world's leading specialists. The first section commences with detailed histories of the surviving confraternal orders, beginning with the famous Order of Malta. The second section includes histories of all the great European single class Collar Orders, by date of foundation, beginning with the Order of the Garter (England) and including the Orders from Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, Scotland, Spain and Sweden. The third includes histories of the most prestigious Orders of Chivalry and the remaining sections include one devoted to royal dynastic Orders, another to ladies' Orders and the largest section: State Merit Orders. The main portion ends with a section on institutions of chivalric character. Each Order's purpose, structure, investiture details, officers and membership requirements will be listed along with details of the insignia. These lavishly illustrated, full colour volumes also include illustrations of the uniforms, robes and insignia as well as photographs and paintings of related places and people, diplomas, armorial bearings and ceremonies of investiture. This unique volume will be of great interest to academics, historians, collectors and members of any of the numerous international orders.

The book, 'The Ecclesiastical Orders of Knighthood' is an informative account of the history, organization, emblems and membership requirements of the various Orders connected with the Catholic Church. The book mentions the two prominent groups—one which follows the Papal Orders of Knighthood and the other which follows chivalric orders that in turn derive from medieval military orders. In addition, Part One deals with the historical background—the origin and development of Knighthood in general. Parts Two and Three treat the Religious Military Orders which originated in the Holy Land—The Order of Malta, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, the Teutonic Order—and the Military Orders of Spain and Portugal. Finally, Part Four treats of those Orders which are directly bestowed by the Holy See—the Order of Christ, the Order of the Golden Spur, the Order of Pius, the Order of St. Gregory, and of St. Sylvester. In addition the papal decorations are described.
