The author of these sermons, it may be proper to add, was born in Andover, Mass., May 27, 1830; pastor of the South Church, in his native town, 1855-61; of the First Congregational Church, Oakland, Cal., 1861-72; and of the Plymouth Avenue Church, in the same city, 1874-89. By reason of the kindly appreciation of his hearers in these three parishes, he has had often occasion to thank God and take courage.
