Excerpt from Word Portraits of Famous Writers "The world has always been fond of personal details respecting men who have been celebrated." These were the words of Lord Beaconsfield, and with them he prefixed his description of the personal appearance of Isaac D'Israeli; but we hardly need the dictum of our greatest statesman to convince ourselves that at all events every honest literature-lover takes a very real interest in the individuality of those men whose names are perpetually on his lips. It is not enough for such a one merely to make himself familiar with their writings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Word Portraits Character Sketches of Famous Men and Women The extraordinary influence and power of Maximilian Harden's pen are very largely due to the fact that throughout his brilliant career as an essayist and publicist he has always held aloof from all political party phraseology, to his absolute fearlessness in the expression of his opinions, and to his ready and poignant wit. An extraordinarily well-read scholar - in many languages and on most subjects - his style of composition, a marshalling of long rows of cc-ordinated sentences, bristling with quotations from the classics of all nations and replete with quaint similia, makes delightful reading in the original German. The attempt, however, to reproduce in English the author's peculiarly intricate and highly ornate verbal structure may cause a somewhat stilted effect on the eye and the ear of those attuned to a terser form of descriptive prose. Excerpt from Eminent Authors of the Nineteenth Century: Literary Portraits The nine essays of which this book consists, and of which even those that have already appeared in periodicals, have been thoroughly revised, are not to be regarded as Chips from the Workshop of a critic; they are carefully treated literary portraits, united by a spiritual tie. Men have sat for them, with whom the author, with one exception (es Tegner), has been personally acquainted, or of whom he has at least had a close view. To be sure, the same satisfactory survey cannot always be taken of a living present as of a completed past epoch but perhaps a picture of the present as a whole may be furnished, the general physiognomy may he arrived at, by characterizing as faithfully and vividly as possible, some of its typical forms. "The world has always loved the details of a man who respects men who are celebrated." These were the words of Lord Beaconsfield, and in them he symbolized his description of Isaac D’Israel’s personal appearance; but we do not need the speech of our greatest official to convince ourselves that in all cases every sincere book lover has a genuine interest in each of those men whose names remain on his lips. It is not enough for such a person to become acquainted with their writings. It is not enough for him that the News of Elijah, for example, can be memorized, but he feels that he must also be able to sit on Christ's playing field with a “lame boy,” even years later. to speed up the Garden gardens with a gentle-faced scholar, before being told to make the thoughts of the Lamb his own. Best but not the whole idea most of us have about the true personality of our great British writers. The almost identical beauty of Sidney's femininity, as well as the sharp eyes and papa's razor-sharp face, will probably easily be seen as Drs. Johnson; but taking on many themes even a man who has been widely studied may be forgiven if, among the fragments of rumor and abstract ideas he may come across at unusual times, he can easily awaken the ghosts of these men who wrote their books. he has learned, and in his house he has become a zealous pilgrim.

Excerpt from Portraits of the Eighteenth Century: Historic and Literary But it is not only a choir of immortal artists who have passed from the scene, it is more than that; it is a manner of conceiving the things of the mind that ceases, a literature which departs. Sainte-beuve was the last of the litterateurs in the former sense of the word. We shall never again see writers solely occupied with the things of the intellect, and writing of these with grace and good taste. 1 would I were mistaken, but it seems to me that the pen, in future, is to serve more especially two classes of men - the money-makers and the amusers; on the one hand, the language of busi ness; on the other, that of violent effects and puerile surprises. Excerpt from Our Great Writers: Or, Popular Chapters on Some Leading Authors It is also hoped that the Book will demonstrate that the cultivation of our literature should not be placed under the ban which it is placed under by some 'serious' people; as literature (with that mixture of evil which belongs to all human things) is neither more nor less than a record of the noblest and best thoughts of the best and noblest minds.' Though many labourers have worked in this field, it is still rich enough to repay not one, but many, more. The treatment in the present instance is biographical, with an expository aim -the incidents and characteristics of the author being set in connection with the thoughts, found in his works. Two chapters are of an entirely expository kind, dealing only with the works of the authors - one on 'hamlet, ' the other on IN memoriam.' These are attempts to popularize the highest thinking of shakespeare and tennyson, which it is hoped will prove acceptable. Sectarian bias is, of course, excluded; the Author holding that the works of our great men, whatever be their faults, should be treated. Not in a strait-laced or dogmatic, but in a con siderate and liberal, spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
