Excerpt from Word Portraits Character Sketches of Famous Men and Women The extraordinary influence and power of Maximilian Harden's pen are very largely due to the fact that throughout his brilliant career as an essayist and publicist he has always held aloof from all political party phraseology, to his absolute fearlessness in the expression of his opinions, and to his ready and poignant wit. An extraordinarily well-read scholar - in many languages and on most subjects - his style of composition, a marshalling of long rows of co-ordinated sentences, bristling with quotations from the classics of all nations and replete with quaint similia, makes delightful reading in the original German. The attempt, however, to reproduce in English tho author's peculiarly intricate and highly ornate verbal structure may cause a somewhat stilted effect on the eye and the ear of those attuned to a terser form of descriptive prose. Born in Berlin on October 20, 1861, Maximilian Harden was educated at the High School in the Prussian capital and subsequently under private tutors. Excerpt from Portraits and Sketches These short studies of authors whom I have known more or less intimately, and have observed with curiosity and admiration, base whatever value they may possess on their independence. They are imperfect, perhaps erroneous, but they are not second-hand. Whether they are the result of a few flashing glimpses, or of the patient scrutiny of many years, in either case they are my own. I hope that some of them, at least, may be found to possess the interest which attaches to even a rude pencil sketch of a famous person, drawn faithfully from the life. Excerpt from Great Men and Famous Women, Vol. 1: A Series of Pen and Pencil Sketches of the Lives of More Than 200 of the Most Prominent Personages in History When Nebuchadnezzar rested after his conquests, secure in the subjugation of his rivals, and in the possession of his vast kingdom, he gave himself up to the material improvement of Babylon and the surrounding country. The city as he left it, at the end Of his reign of forty-three years, was built on both sides Of the Euphrates, and covered a space of four hundred square miles, equal to five times the size of London. It was surrounded by a triple wall Of bri'ck the innermost, over three hundred feet high, and eighty-five feet broad at the top, with room for four chariots to drive abreast. The walls were pierced by one hundred gate-ways framed in brass and with brazen gates, and at the points Where the Euphrates entered and left the city the walls also turned and followed the course of the river, thus dividing the city into two fortified parts. These two districts were connected by a bridge Of stone piers, guarded by portcullises, and ferries also plied between the quays that lined the river-banks, to which access was given by gates in the walls. Excerpt from Cartoon Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Men of the Day Meantime brave Shaw usurps the martial plain, And spreads the field with Gallic heaps of slain. The young poet was sent to Cambridge, where in 1825 he won the Chancellor's medal and after another volume of verse, gave the world Falkland, ' his first novel. A large part of this work is made up of letters from one of the characters to another; and the old style of heading, From the same to the same, ' becomes very tedious, as they talk in vapid platitudes, slightly spiced with Byronic morality. The preface is dated March 7, 1827. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
