Willem Mengelberg is undeniably the greatest conductor in Dutch music history. In his biography, Frits Zwart carefully examines a musical life lived. Mengelberg was not only one of the world's greatest, he had an excellent reputation as a trainer of orchestral ensembles, responsible for the international reputation of his own Concertgebouw as well as many others including the New York Philharmonic. A champion of numerous composers, including Mahler and Strauss, Mengelberg was the founder of the renowned tradition of annual performances of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. As Chief Conductor of Amsterdam's (now Royal) Concertgebouw Orchestra, Mengelberg developed it into one of the world's most illustrious, simultaneously forging a music life of international eminence for its city of residence. His recordings bear witness to a singular musical interpreter. In 1920, Mengelberg was even more popular than his own Queen, yet a mere thirty years later he died in exile, banned to his remote Swiss chalet. Willem Mengelberg fell from grace, becoming a despised, disputed target of gossip, jealousy and rebuke. His dubious role during World War II has since overshadowed his extraordinary career. Zwart contests that few have ever surpassed Mengelberg's international musical legend.

Barcelonian Gaspar Cassadó (1897-1966) was one of the greatest cello virtuosi of the twentieth century and a notable composer and arranger, leaving a vast and heterogeneous legacy. In this book, Gabrielle Kaufman provides the first full-length scholarly work dedicated to Cassadó, containing the results of seven years of research into his life and legacy, after following the cellist’s steps through Spain, France, Italy and Japan. The study presents in-depth descriptions of the three main parts of Cassadó’s creative output: composition, transcription and performance, especially focusing on Cassadó’s plural and multi-facetted creativity, which is examined from both cultural and historical perspectives. Cassadó’s role within the evolution of twentieth-century cello performance is thoroughly examined, including a discussion regarding the musical and technical aspects of performing Cassadó’s works, aimed directly at performers. The study presents the first attempt at a comprehensive catalogue of Cassadó’s works, both original and transcribed, as well as his recordings, using a number of new archival sources and testimonies. In addition, the composer’s significance within Spanish twentieth-century music is treated in detail through a number of case studies, sustained by examples from recovered score manuscripts. Illuminated by extraordinary source material Gaspar Cassadó: Cellist, Composer and Transcriber expands and deepens our knowledge of this complex figure, and will be of crucial importance to students and scholars in the fields of Performance Practice and Spanish Music, as well as to professional cellists and advanced cello students.

This book explores the fascinating world of the record business, its technology, the music and the musicians from Edison's phonograph to the compact disc. The great artists - Caruso, Toscanini, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley and their successors - all achieved fame through the medium of records, and in turn have influenced the recording industry. But just as important are the record producers, those invisible figures who decide from behind the scenes how a record will sound. The history of recording is also the history of record companies: the book follows the vicissitudes of the multinational giants, without neglecting the small pioneering labels which have brought valuable new talents to the fore.

Back in early 1970’s RCA released the LPs of Charles Gerhardt “Classic Film Scores”, a tribute to Hollywood Golden Era film scores. It was a now legendary series of albums with gorgeous recordings and splendid work of both Charles Gerhardt, the National Philharmonic Orchestra and sound engineer Kenneth Wilkinson. Pictures of the recording sessions are extremely rare but I had the luck to be invited as young photographer at London’s Kingsway Hall during the recording session of the “Lost Horizon - Classic Film Scores of Dimitri Tiomkin” album in 1975, and found back the pictures recently. Luckily, the great Hollywood composer Dimitri Tiomkin was there to watch and listen the recording of an album all about his legendary film scores, and you’ll see him on the pictures, sitting in the background. This eBook, which includes a foreword by Charles Gerhardt' friend Robert E Benson, is a tribute to both Charles Gerhardt and the London National Philamonic Orchestra for their splendid work. Through this never-seen-before collection of black and white pictures you will be able to feel the “atmosphere" of the recording session at London’s Kingsway Hall.
