In the last few pages is a quite complete list of New York birds and concise data in regard to their occurrence. As might be expected considering the size and location of the state, a very great many species occur or have been taken here. The sandy beaches and mud flats of Long Island furnish an ideal retreat or resting place for all sorts of water fowl and shore birds. The Carolinian Area of the Austral Zone extends to Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley; hence a great many southern species occur, species that otherwise would be very unusual in this latitude, such as Kentucky, Hooded and Worm-eating Warblers. Only Manhattan’s Central and Brooklyn’s Prospect Parks have preliminary species lists, not revised since 1967, and the last book examining the birdlife of the entire New York City area is now more than fifty years old. This book updates the avifaunas of those two parks, the Bronx, and other New York City boroughs. It treats the 301 bird species known to have occurred within its study area—Van Cortlandt Park and the adjacent Northwest Bronx—plus 70 potential additions. Its 123 breeding species are tracked from 1872 and supplemented by quantitative breeding bird censuses from 1937 to 2015. Gains and losses of breeding species are discussed in light of an expanding New York City inexorably extinguishing unique habitats.

Frequent complaints of this nature have induced me to offer the present volume, with a view of placing within the reach of the "gunners," the means of becoming more thoroughly acquainted with the birds frequenting Long Island. The additions all departments of Natural History are continually receiving, is evidence, that with however much zeal and energy the different branches have been pursued, and notwithstanding the praiseworthy exertions bestowed by those who have distinguished themselves in their various pursuits, still we find their labors are not so far complete as to leave nothing for their successors. While the Botanist, Mineralogist, Entomologist, and Conchologist are enriching their cabinets, the Ornithologist is finding in our vast territory undescribed species. The "Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia," (1841, ) contains an article giving the views of Dr. Bachman, relative to the course our Naturalists should pursue in the publication of American species viz. that all north of the Tropic of Cancer twenty-three and a half degrees, should be called North America - the Tropics, Tropical or Central America - and south of the Tropic of Capricorn, South America." The large scope which our Zoology embraces, deters many persons from making collections, as they despair ever being able to complete them.
