At an early period Mr. Ballantine turned his attention to an impor tant branch of art in connection with his profession, which had almost died out in Scotland - the art of glass staining. His successful competition for the stained glass windows in the House of Lords at once indicated the proficiency which he had attained in this department of art, and gave a stimulus to the deeper study of its principles, and to laborious and unwearied exertions in carrying these principles into practice. His views on this important subject were embodied in a work of con siderable merit which, in addition to a pretty wide circula tion in this country, had the distinction of being tran slated into German. The work which Mr. Ballantine then successfully began has been carried to a much higher state of perfection under his accomplished son, whose masterly work in stained glass is well known not only throughout Scotland and England, but in almost every quarter of the world. The improvement which is happily taking place in the church architecture of Scotland has created an increasing demand for work of this kind which may be said to be essential to church adornment. It is satisfactory to know that in this, as in other branches of art, our native artists are taking a foremost place.
