Excerpt from Warships Associated With World War II in the Pacific: National Historic Landmark Theme Study During the course of this study more than 40 surviving warships and merchantmen dating from World War II were identified and visited. Twenty-five of these were found likely to meet the criteria of the National Historic Landmarks Program and are represented by inventory forms in this study. A twenty-sixth ship, uss Missouri, is written up because it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but is not likely to meet the criteria because of substantial changes made to her since listing. These vessels include most of the major types and classes of warships to see service from 1941 to 1945. The theme study is organized by classes because this is the best way to organize and describe the types of ships that saw service in the war. Many of these classes, especially for the destroyers and submarines, represent the development of warship design theory that evolved as a result of the hard lessons learned in battle against the Japanese during the war. Because of this, many of these classes are individually important and represent either an interim or final point in warship design. Included in this study are aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, submarines, minesweepers, and a number of other types such as Liberty Ships, and PT Boats. One German submarine is included in this theme study for several reasons first, it is the only surviving one of its type anywhere; second, it relates to War in the Pacific in that the German submarine threat had to be defeated in order to shift strategic emphasis to the Pacific theater. Top-ranking Japanese officers offer their personal perspectives of the Pacific War. Lauded by historians and World War II buffs eager for the Japanese viewpoint, this collection of essays makes significant contributions to the field of World War II literature. This second edition, originally published in 1986, adds five articles to the original twelve to provide a full picture of the Japanese’s navy’s role in the war. Most of these moving accounts were written in the 1950s and retain the immediacy felt by the writers when they participated in the events. They provide valuable information on the strategy, tactics, and operations of the Japanese fleet, as well as insights into the personalities and motives of its leaders. Here, Vice Admiral Shigeru Fukudome comes to grips with allegations that the assault on Pearl Harbor represented strategic folly, political blundering, and tactical stupidity. Captain Mitsuo Fuchida describes how his bombing group unleashed “devils of doom” on Battleship Row, and Mitsuru Yoshida gives an eye-witness account of the sinking of the famous battleship Yamato. The new contributions to the volume, translated especially for this book by the editor, discuss operations in the Indian Ocean, the battle of the Philippine Sea, the protection of merchant shipping, submarine warfare, and Japan’s overll naval strategy. A brief introduction precedes each essay to set it in historical context, and a biographical summary of each contributor is included. A striking collection of photographs and maps, many of which are new to this edition, augment the text.

The Navy of World War II, 1922-1946 comprehensively covers the vessels that defined this momentous 24-year period in U.S. naval history. Beginning with the lean, pared-down navy created by the treaty at the Washington Naval Conference, and ending with the massive, awe-inspiring fleets that led the Allies to victory in the Second World War, the fourth volume in the celebrated U.S. Navy Warship series presents a detailed guide to all the warships that exhibited the might of the U.S. Navy to the fullest. Showcasing all the ships—both the famous and the often overlooked-that propelled the U.S Navy to prominence in the first half of the twentieth century, The Navy of World War II catalogues all the warships from this era, including those that did battle in the European, Mediterranean, and Pacific Theaters from 1941-1946. From the fleet attacked at Pearl Harbor, to those that fought valiantly in the Battle of the Guadalcanal, to the official surrender of the Japanese on the deck of the USS Missouri, this latest volume is the definitive guide to the warships that defined this pivotal period in U.S. naval history. Each volume in the U.S. Navy Warship series represents the most meticulous scholarship for its particular era, providing an authoritative account of every ship in the history of the U. S. Navy from its first incarnation as the Continental Navy to its present position as one of the world’s most formidable naval superpowers. Featuring convenient, easy-to-read tabular lists, every book in the series includes an abundance of illustrations, some never before published, along with figures for actions fought, damages sustained, casualties suffered, prizes taken, and ships sunk, ultimately making the series an indispensable reference tool for maritime buffs and military historians alike.
