Excerpt from The Medal Collector: A Guide to Naval, Military, Airforce and Civil Medals and Ribbons In order to differentiate between the medals intended to be worn and those that are circular like coins and possess no clip attachment, there is a growing tendency to reserve the word medal for the former and to speak of the latter as medallions. It cannot be claimed, however, that the meanings here suggested are universally accepted, though the trend is to observe them, more and more, as time goes on. Excerpt from War Medals and Their History If any excuse were needed for penning this, it is to be found in the exceeding interest which was taken in my monograph "Badges of the Brave." Indeed, many readers have requested me to deal, at greater length, with a subject which not only opens up a great historical vista and awakens national sentiment, but, incidentally, serves an educational mission to those who collect and those who sell the metallic records of many a hard-fought field, which, when collated, form an imperishable record of our island story. The War Medal is a comparatively modern institution, otherwise we might have learned the names of the common folk who fought so tenaciously in the old wars, as, for instance, the Welsh infantry and Irish soldiers who, with the English bowmen, comprised the army of 30,000 which at Crecy routed an army of 120,000; the followers of the Black Prince who captured the impetuous King John at Poitiers, or the English archers whose deadly volleys made such havoc at Agincourt, on that fateful day in October nearly five hundred years ago; the brave seamen who, under Lord Howard, Drake, Hawkins, and Frobisher, fought the !t Invincible Armada"; and those who, under Raleigh, vigorously pursued the Spaniards on the high seas. Excerpt from War Medals and Decorations Issued to the British Military and Naval Forces and Allies 1588 to 1910 The older medals become scarcer year by year, and so the difficulty of obtaining a perfect collection becomes greater. Another unfortunate fact is, that before interest in this subject was aroused many valu able and unique medals had found their way to the melting-pot, a loss which, from a numismatical point, it is impossible to over - estimate. As instances of what collections can be made by perseverance and care, may be mentioned those of Colonel the Hon. H. F. Eaton, Colonel Murray, and Captain Whitaker, all of them containing some speci mens which may be safely described as unique. The Author wishes to express his indebtedness to Colonel the Hon. H. F. Eaton, Colonel Murray, lieut.-colonel Whalley, Captain Greg, Captain Tancred, Captain Whitaker, R. Day, Jun., Esq., and J. Harris Gibson, Esq., for many hints and much valu able information, without which this compilation would have been very much more difficult.
