Excerpt from Wanderings Through the Ruins Heidelberg Castle: And Its Environs, With Views and Plan Encouraged by well-disposed patrons and friends, as well as distinguished travellers, to whom either I or my servants, have had the honour of showing the ruins of the castle of Heidelberg, rendered sacred by history and the arts, and to explain to them the interesting historical accounts relating to it, I have taken the liberty of committing to writing my manner of explaining these celebrated ruins, so that every one may be enabled to look into it and judge for themselves. As Castellain of the castle of Heidelberg, I consider this as a duty I owe to the public; but am far from wishing thereby in my little publication, of enriching the book-trade with a new historical work of the castle of Heidelberg, and what it has experienced; for that I feel I have neither the vocation nor the desire; but (being appointed Castellain of the castle, and having the sole right and duty to show if required, or cause to be shown by persons in my service, all things worthy of being seen in this renowned princely castle), to explain to the tourist who is anxious to know, as exactly and simply as possible, every object of artistical and historical interest in these magnificent ruins, and it being my custom strictly to fulfil the functions of my charge, I have well examined the works written on this subject, and have found, that though they possess merit in many respects, they do not sufficiently answer the object or the demands of the present times so well, as an experience of many years enables me to desire or to exact.
