The literature of future wars is an exciting and popular genre embracing classics such as The War of the Worlds and mass-market bestsellers such as The Amtrak Wars. Here sci-fi meets the spy thriller, the war novel meets the novel of dystopia, quality fiction meets the bestseller. Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Erskine Childer's The Riddle of the Sands, and Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 are typical in combining critical and commercial success. This new edition of Voices Prophesying War shows how the genre developed, accounts for its success, and describes how it is still changing. The first examples of such fiction are as much concerned with politics as with war. The Anonymous Reign of George VI, published in 1763 and set in 1918 describes the triumphant imperialism of an English monarch who still leads his troops into battle on horseback. A century later the first recognizable classic of the genre, The Battle of Dorking, played on the theme of unpreparedness for war, describing a Prussian invasion of the British Isles. Imaginary invasions by the French, Germans, Americans, Russians, Soviets, and, of course, Martians, followed in huge numbers. Throughout the nineteenth century novelists wrote with increasing sophistication on the technology of war; often, as in the case of Conan Doyle and H. G. Wells, they were in advance of the generals and scientists, and their prophesies were fulfilled, in terrible fashion, by two world wars. Since the Second World War American authors have come to the fore, and the nuclear age has produced such classics as Nevil Shute's On the Beach. The Cold War has also given rise to a great many bestsellers, some, like General Sir John Hackett's The Third WorldWar, marking a return to an older theme - of predictions of war by professional soldiers. This new edition of Voices Prophesying War examines recent work in detail and includes a unique checklist of all major future war fiction (in English, French, and German) to have appeared since the eighteenth century.

How can culture, politics and business work together to meet the challenges of the future? Will united Europe fall victim to individual national interests? Is the economy the silver bullet when it comes to solving global challenges? Can policy makers still lead in an age of fake news and escalating expectations? What kind of support is needed – and from which culture – to shape a sustainable society? The book Voices for the Future documents the lively exchange between international thought leaders from the cultural, economic and political spheres on solutions to current and coming problems. Since 2002, they have been gathering at the Trilogue Salzburg to take a shared look at what the future holds. Where has the Trilogue been farsighted in terms of the issues that now dominate the policy agenda and our everyday lives? What must (still) happen if we are to respond effectively to future challenges? Voices for the Future essays answers to these questions, addressing the topics of Europe, the labor market, leadership, education and values.

A groundbreaking collection of poetry, personal narratives, and art from refugee youth around the world. Foreword by actor and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Ben Stiller. Beginning in 2018, Ahmed M. Badr—an Iraqi-American poet and former refugee—traveled to Greece, Trinidad & Tobago, and Syracuse, New York, holding storytelling workshops with hundreds of displaced youth: those living in and outside of camps, as well as those adjusting to life after resettlement. Combining Badr’s own poetry with the personal narratives and creative contributions of dozens of young refugees, While the Earth Sleeps We Travel seeks to center and amplify the often unheard perspectives of those navigating through and beyond the complexities of displacement. The result is a diverse and moving collection—a meditation on the concept of "home" and a testament to the power of storytelling.

Journey for Tomorrow leaves behind stories like Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, classics that taught us to fear other creatures. Rather, it inspires with the tale of dolphins saving a little girl, something that actually happens from time to time, and the girl later saving animals of the Earth. Sarah, living with compassion and dedication, shows us how we must help our animal friends and maintain positive relationships with them.
