The Vickers Armstrong Wellington, affectionately dubbed the "Wimpy" after the hamburger-scoffing cartoon character, lays claim to two distinctions within RAF WWII annals. The first related to its geodetic structure, with a cloth covering that proved to be superior to previous designs for surviving battle damage. Second, the aircraft was destined to remain on the front line with Bomber Command throughout the entire course of the war. Whether serving as a first-generation bomber between 1939 and 1943, along with its Whitley and Hampden contemporaries, or on antisubmarine operations with Coastal Command, it proved to be a critical asset in applying steady inhibiting pressure on Axis Europe. Service as an aircrew trainer both during and following WWII was a secondary but very valuable function, as were latter-day duties with Transport Command. This book is a concise, visual history of this iconic RAF WWII bomber by noted aviation historian Ron Mackay.

To date there has been a paucity of books on this remarkable aircraft. Among its claims to fame are the following: the only RAF bomber to serve in its original role from first day of war to last, and in every theater; the first type to bomb Germany; the first type to bomb Berlin; the first type to drop the 4,000lb ‘Cookie’ bomb; and so on. A serious study is well overdue, drawing not just on official documentation but relying greatly on personal accounts and anecdotes from the veterans who were there, both air and ground crew. And here it is. Through his diligent research over many years, author Steve Bond has produced an outstanding work. His coverage of operations will include, inter alia, the early bombing campaigns, the switch to main force activity, the use of OTU aircraft and crews on operations, the protection of Atlantic and Mediterranean convoys, service with the FAA and the French and the Wellington’s continued use as bomber and transport aircraft. A worthy tribute, then, replete with original photographs throughout.

NEW IN PAPERBACK The twin-engine Vickers Wellington was one of the outstanding RAF bomber aircraft of the Second World War, as well as a capable maritime patrol aircraft and submarine hunter with Coastal Command. Centrepiece of this manual is Wellington Mk Ia, N2980, 'R' for Robert, one of only two surviving examples of the Wellington in the world and restored to display condition at the Brooklands Museum, Weybridge, Surrey. Iain Murray gives a fascinating insight into operating, flying and maintaining Barnes Wallis's geodetic wonder with the help of many rarely seen photographs and technical illustrations.

The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a handbook on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft preserved in Canada. The majority of the Canadian Warbird and War Prize Survivors are on display within a significant number of aviation museums. Many others are displayed as "gate guards" on or near a number of Canadian and Allied Armed Forces Bases and installations. There are also a few in the hands of private owners and collectors that have been restored to flying status. These include a number of foreign warbird survivors that were brought back to Canada as War Prizes. The museum staffs and volunteer organizations such as the Canadian Aviation Preservation Association (CAPA) have done tremendous work in preserving military and civilian aircraft that have been a major part of Canada's aviation heritage. A few of these aircraft are illustrated in this book, along with a short description of the aircraft flown by Canadian servicemen and women. The aircraft are listed alphabetically, along with a city or museum location, the manufacturer, aircraft serial number and call sign where known. Canadian Warbird and War Prize Survivors is part of a series on aircraft used by the Canadian Forces throughout its history.

The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple checklist on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft that are preserved in Canada. The majority of the Canadian Warbird Survivors are on display within a great number of well maintained aviation museums, many others are displayed as ¡°gate guards¡± near or in a number of Canadian Forces Bases, and a good number are in the hands of private collectors. Many are not listed in any catalogue, but have been found by ¡°word of mouth,¡± or personal observation. The museum staffs and volunteer organizations throughout Canada have done a particularly good job of preserving the great variety of Canadian military aircraft, illustrated here. Hopefully, as more aircraft are recovered from their crash sites in the bush and restored, traded or brought back from private owners, they too will be added to the record. The book lists the aircraft alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. This list is also appended with a brief summary of the aircraft presently on display within the nation and a bit of its history within the Canadian Forces. Canadian Warbirds books are available through the iUniverse.com or the Amazon.com online bookstores.
