"My dad, on the 7th of December 1941, couldn't understand why, as he said, the land of his birth was attacking the land of his heart." - Hon. Norman Mineta"When I first saw Heart Mountain, my heart sank. Bleak, scrubby, barren, desolate... somber tar-paper shacks...guard towers with armed American soldiers, guarding American prisoners." - Frank Hayami"I'm afraid there's going to be some trouble if the mess hall situation isn't cleared up...they had no food for breakfast...there wasn't enough for supper, and they had been eating frankfurters for three days. - Administrator John A. Nelson Diary These are just three of the many Unforgotten Voices from Heart Mountain, a U.S. government prison camp, in the harsh high desert of Wyoming during World War II. It was one of ten such camps where 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, two-thirds of them American-born citizens were incarcerated. Their only crime was looking like the enemy. Told in their own words, from interviews, diaries, and letters these are authentic heartfelt histories; told by those who lived it-the prisoners, those who imprisoned them, and townspeople. Their stories live on to witness and warn what happens when the foundational principles of our democracy are forgotten and we fail to protect the civil liberties of others as well as our own.

Stanley Hayami was sixteen when he was sent to Heart Mountain, an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. He kept a diary of his life in the camps, augmented with sketches and drawings. In 1944, like many young Nisei men, he was drafted into the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team, an all-Nisei unit, continuing to write and earning a Bronze Star. He never lost his faith in America, and remained defiantly patriotic to the last. He was killed in combat in Northern Italy on April 23rd, 1945, while trying to help a fellow soldier. He was nineteen years old. This book is based on his diary, now in the permanent collection of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, Ca.

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and “one of the greatest poets of our age … the Thoreau of our era” (Edward Hirsch) comes a thrilling story, in verse, of nineteenth-century Hawaii. Here is the story of an attempt by the government to seize and constrain possible victims of leprosy and the determination of one small family not to be taken. A tale of the perils and glories of their flight into the wilds of the island of Kauai, pursued by a gunboat full of soldiers. A brilliant capturing—inspired by the poet's respect for the people of these islands—of their life, their history, the gods and goddesses of their mythic past. A somber revelation of the wrecking of their culture through the exploitative incursions of Europeans and Americans. An epic narrative that enthralls with the grandeur of its language and of its vision.
