Excerpt from Two Years on the Alabama Captain raphael semmes's account of the service of the Alabama, as the public probably observed, was most carefully confined within the limits of legal and profes Sional statement. It was no part of his purpose to enter into the details of life on board, or to make any unne cessary confidences respecting himself or the officers and crew who Shared his labors and successes. It is hardly necessary, therefore, to Offer any apology for the matter contained in this volume. It will not be doubted that a cruise so unique and remarkable had its share of daily and hourly interests, and of manifestations of that human na ture which is of the first consequence in all narrative. Excerpt from History of Alabama, Vol. 2 of 2: And Incidentally of Georgia and Mississippi, From the Earliest Period WE mentioned, at the conclusion of the first volume of this work, that France had surrendered all of her North American possessions. Before finally doing so, however, she made a secret treaty with Spain, her ally, in which she ceded to that power the territory on the western side of the Mississippi, extending from the mouth of that river to its remotest sour ces, and including the Island of new-orleans, which lay on the eastern side of the great river, and south of the Bayou Iberville or Manchac. Excerpt from Richard Hurdis: Tale of Alabama Richard hurdis was singularly successful with the public in spite of much hostile criticism. It was objected, to the story, that it was of too gloomy and savage a character. But the en tire aspect of a sparsely-settled forest, or mountain country, is grave and saddening, even where society is stationary and consistent; and, where society is only in process of formation the saddening and the grave in its aspect are but too apt to take on even sterner features, and to grow into the gloomy and ferocious. It is quite enough, in answer to the objection, to say that the general protraiture is not only a truthful one, in the present case, but that the materials are really of histor ical character. The story is a genuine chronicle of the border region where the scene is laid, and of the period when the date is fixed. Its action, throughout, is founded on well-known facts. Its personages were real, living men; being, doing, and suffer ing, as here reported. Nothing has been extenuate, nothing has been set down in malice. A softer coloring might. Have been employed, and, more frequently, scenes of repose might have been introduced for relieving the intense and fierce aspects of the story; but these would have been out of place in a narrative so dramatic of cast, and where the action is so rapid.
