Excerpt from Two London Fairies She was not a fairy herself. She had lived in Mortal Land in a cottage made of hardbake and barley sugar, with a ginger bread roof, to which she used to lure little boys and girls against whose parents she had a spite. But the fairies interfered with her business dreadfully, always rescuing the children after they had eaten a considerable portion of the cottage. The first compilation of the full first-edition texts of the classic fairy tale collections by Joseph Jacobs, with Jacobs' original prefaces and annotations. In these two classic collections, first published in 1890 and 1894, Joseph Jacobs combined folklore, children's literature, and the eclectic scholarship of the Victorian era to create a storehouse of tales that inhabited the imaginations of children and adults for generations. Here readers first met Tom Tit Tot, Molly Whuppie, and Jack the Giant-Killer, and first read the stories of the Three Little Pigs, the Three Bears, and Henny-Penny. Jacobs' daring collections challenged conventional thinking about the meaning of "folk," the individual artistry behind folktales, and the boundaries between folklore and literature, anticipating modern developments in folklore studies. His original editions of these 87 classic tales, along with the original illustrations, are reprinted in this new volume, offering readers an unsurpassed understanding of the development of the classic fairy tale in late Victorian England.

Excerpt from Fairies I Have Met "That is more than I can say," he answered. "Perhaps when you are old I shall be obliged to go away." Then Penelope asked Sunbeam the Second - "Shall you always stay in my eyes?" "I hope so," said Sunbeam the Second; "but perhaps if you are unhappy I shall be obliged to go away." Then the corners of Penelope's mouth began to droop a little. "Dear Sunbeam," she said to Sunbeam the Third, "shall you be always in my heart?" "Yes, if you keep me there," said Sunbeam the Third. "How can I keep you there?" asked Penelope. "You must love the fairies," said the sunbeam, "and understand them when they speak to you. If you love the fairies even when you are old, I shall stay in your heart always." These stories have been written for Penelope, so that she may love the fairies, and keep the sunbeam always in her heart. Ever since its early modern inception as a literary genre unto its own, the fairy tale has frequently provided authors with a textual space in which to reflect on the nature, status and function of their own writing and that of literature in general. At the same time, it has served as an ideal laboratory for exploring and experimenting with the boundaries of literary convention and propriety. While scholarship pertaining to these phenomena has focused primarily on the fairy-tale adaptations and deconstructions of postmodern(ist) writers, this essay collection adopts a more diachronic approach. It offers fairy-tale scholars and students a series of theoretical and literary-historical expositions, as well as case studies on English, French, German, Swedish, Danish, and Romanian texts from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century, by authors as diverse as Marie-Catherine d’Aulnoy, Rikki Ducornet, Hans Christian Andersen and Robert Coover.
