An experimental study of the turbulent wake behind a 9° adiabatic cone at Mach 5 has been carried out in the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory Hypersonic Tunnel. Cone models with base diameters of 2 inches and 4 inches were mounted in the wind tunnel test section with fine wires. Pitot pressure, pressure on a small cone probe and total temperature were measured with probes mounted on a vertical traversing mechanism. The measured pressures and temperatures were used to calculate the Mach number, static pressure, static temperature, velocity and density in the wake.

obtained are still severely limited to low Reynolds numbers (about only one decade better than direct numerical simulations), and the interpretation of such calculations for complex, curved geometries is still unclear. It is evident that a lot of work (and a very significant increase in available computing power) is required before such methods can be adopted in daily's engineering practice. I hope to l"Cport on all these topics in a near future. The book is divided into six chapters, each· chapter in subchapters, sections and subsections. The first part is introduced by Chapter 1 which summarizes the equations of fluid mechanies, it is developed in C~apters 2 to 4 devoted to the construction of turbulence models. What has been called "engineering methods" is considered in Chapter 2 where the Reynolds averaged equations al"C established and the closure problem studied (§1-3). A first detailed study of homogeneous turbulent flows follows (§4). It includes a review of available experimental data and their modeling. The eddy viscosity concept is analyzed in §5 with the l"Csulting ~alar-transport equation models such as the famous K-e model. Reynolds stl"Css models (Chapter 4) require a preliminary consideration of two-point turbulence concepts which are developed in Chapter 3 devoted to homogeneous turbulence. We review the two-point moments of velocity fields and their spectral transforms (§ 1), their general dynamics (§2) with the particular case of homogeneous, isotropie turbulence (§3) whel"C the so-called Kolmogorov's assumptions are discussed at length.

Most natural and industrial flows are turbulent. The atmosphere and oceans, automobile and aircraft engines, all provide examples of this ubiquitous phenomenon. In recent years, turbulence has become a very lively area of scientific research and application, attracting many newcomers who need a basic introduction to the subject. An Introduction to Turbulent Flow, first published in 2000, offers a solid grounding in the subject of turbulence, developing both physical insight and the mathematical framework needed to express the theory. It begins with a review of the physical nature of turbulence, statistical tools, and space and time scales of turbulence. Basic theory is presented next, illustrated by examples of simple turbulent flows and developed through classical models of jets, wakes, and boundary layers. A deeper understanding of turbulence dynamics is provided by spectral analysis and its applications. The final chapter introduces the numerical simulation of turbulent flows. This well-balanced text will interest graduate students in engineering, applied mathematics, and the physical sciences.

Use transport theory we have calculated the radar cross section of an underdense turbulent wake in the limit when the scale size of the turbulence is larger than the signal wavelength. We have found that for bistatic scatter the first Born approximation is valid, even if the wake is many photon mean-free paths in extent. However, neither the Born approximation nor the modified Born approximation is valid for the nonostatic radar cross section when the wake is many photon mean-free paths in extent. In this case a modified result, derived in this report, must be used.

Without major changes, the current air transportation system will be unable to accommodate the expected increase in demand by 2025. One proposal to address this problem is to use the Global Positioning System to enable aircraft to fly more closely spaced. This approach, however, might be limited by the wake turbulence problem, which can be a safety hazard when smaller aircraft follow relatively larger aircraft too closely. To examine how this potential hazard might be reduced, Congress in 2005 directed NASA to request a study from the NRC to assess the federal wake turbulence R&D program. This book provides a description of the problem, an assessment of the organizational challenges to addressing wake turbulence, an analysis of the technical challenges in wake turbulence, and a proposal for a wake turbulence program plan. A series of recommendations for addressing the wake turbulence challenge are also given.

A stark, eye-opening and exquisitely poignant new novel spanning the globe and probing the issues that define our times. As a young man comes to terms with his father's death, he is forced to face his own demons, and confront the possibility of change... 'This is a remarkably well-written, sophisticated novel in which the people and places all come alive on the page...' Literary Review 'Searing ... at times achieves the level of genuine poetry' Publishers Weekly Ethan Scofield returns to the place of his birth to bury his father. Hidden in one of the upstairs rooms of the old man's house he finds a strange manuscript, a collection of stories that seems to cover the whole of his father's turbulent life. As his own life starts to unravel, Ethan works his way through the manuscript, trying to find answers to the mysteries that have plagued him since he was a child. What happened to his little brother? Why was his mother taken from him? And why, in the end, when there was no one else left, did his own father push him away? Swinging from the coral cays of the Caribbean to the dangerous deserts of Yemen and the wild rivers of Africa, Turbulent Wake is a bewitching, powerful and deeply moving story of love and loss ... of the indelible damage we do to those closest to us and, ultimately, of the power of redemption in a time of change. 'The quality of Hardisty's writing and the underlying truth of his plots sets this above many other thrillers' West Australia 'Turbulent Wake is moving, it caused me to ache deep inside, oh, and it is also a rather beautiful read too' LoveReading 'The writing is sublime SO different from the Claymore Straker series but just as compelling - a round-the-world journey through a lifetime of regrets.
