He has given a masterly account of the outbreak of beriberi in the Army, especially that associated with the siege of Kut. Many of the facts have already been reported on, but he makes it quite clear that the troops were simultaneously suffering from both partial starvation and beriberi, and that the condition of inanition produced by the starvation always favoured the development of beriberi symptoms; malaria was also a predisposing cause.
