DOWNLOAD EBOOK →This issue of the Surgical Oncology Clinics of North America, Guest Edited by Dr. William G. Cance, is devoted to Translational Cancer Research for Surgeons. Translational Cancer research aims to move bench research to the bedside by applying basic science toward potential therapies. This issue will present the concepts of translational research and development of targeted therapeutics, and its implications for surgeons. It will show clinical applications for surgeons regarding sarcoma/GIST, melanoma, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and endocrine cancer.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Written by a multidisciplinary team of experts involved in the development of standards and guidelines for its management in the USA, UK, Europe and Asia, the book contains succinct and knowledgeable summaries of the management of thyroid cancer. Every chapter describes a different aspect of care, and provides clear and detailed information about caring for patients with this group of tumors. This is an invaluable reference to health care professionals, from primary to tertiary care, involved in the management of thyroid cancer such as clinical nurse specialists, clinical psychologists, family medicine practitioners, specialists in palliative care (especially for anaplastic thyroid cancers), geneticists and surgeons, endocrinologists, oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Being a complex disease that affects millions of people world over, cancer research has assumed great significance. Translational cancer research transforms scientific discoveries in the laboratory or population studies into clinical application to reduce incidence of cancer , morbidity and mortality. It is becoming increasingly evident that cancer is a preventable disease. The IVth International Symposium on Translational Cancer Research held in Udaipur, India in December 2011, discussed various aspects of the biological processes in cancer cells and approaches to cancer prevention. A few contributions from this meeting are presented in this book, providing an in depth analysis of data on cancer prevention and therapeutics. These contributions are either critical reviews or research reports. The topics discussed include evidence-based nutritional recommendations for cancer patients and survivors, risk factors such as stress, enrichment of tumour stem cells by anticancer drug treatment contributing to tumour recurrence and the mechanism of anticancer effects of various natural products. Chemosensitizing effect of curcumin, anti-cancer effect of products from neem, action of sulforaphane and cytotoxic effect of a number of novel synthetic coordination complexes of trace metals have been discussed. Novel molecular targets of angiogenesis and molecular basis of the gender bias to thyroid cancer have also been discussed . This book provides useful information on translational cancer research to clinicians and biomedical scientists.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Now in its second edition utilizing brand new clinical case material, this popular, user-friendly text presents the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer and related clinical issues, providing clinicians in endocrinology and oncology with the best real-world strategies to properly manage the various manifestations of thyroid cancer that they may encounter. Each chapter is a case report that opens with a unique clinical presentation, followed by a description of the diagnosis, assessment and therapy, as well as the case outcome, literature review, clinical pearls and pitfalls, and bibliography. All recommendations are based on evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and recent literature. Written by experts in the field, these cases illustrate treatment for both low- and high-risk differentiated thyroid cancer, including surgical approaches, radioiodine therapy, and novel chemotherapies and targeted therapies, as well as postoperative follow-up and special issues. Additional cases demonstrate the management of medullary thyroid cancer and anaplastic thyroid cancer. Topics new to the second edition include information on management of small thyroid cancers with “active surveillance” (without surgery), new chemotherapeutic approaches to advanced thyroid cancer, and new information on a lesion that is no longer considered to be thyroid cancer (Neoplastic Follicular Thyroid Neoplasm with Papillary-Like Features [NIFTP]), as well as material on external beam radiotherapy and new approaches to the management of anaplastic thyroid cancer. Pragmatic and reader-friendly, this second edition of Thyroid Cancer: A Case-Based Approach will be an excellent resource for clinical endocrinologists and oncologists, endocrine fellows, residents and students alike.

Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of “Nondiagnostic,” “Benign,” “Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm”, “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant,” and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of “undetermined significance,” which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.
