Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom, 1827, Vol. 1: Part I His Majesty has been graciously pleased to grant to the Society the annual sum of one thousand guineas, to be assigned, in equal portions, to ten Royal Associates of approved learning; together with the further donation of two gold medals, of the value of fifty guineas each, to be awarded annually to authors of works of eminent merit, or for important discoveries in Literature. The adjudication of these marks of distinction His Majesty has vested in the Council of the Society. In the year 1825, His Majesty was pleased to confirm and perpetuate the Society by the grant of a Royal Charter; and in furtherance of his royal intentions, a piece of ground, near the church of St. Martin in the Fields, has been assigned, as the site of a hall, library, and other offices for the use of the Society: a contribution has since been made by several mem bers of the Society towards defraying the expense Of erecting the buildings. A statement of the objects of the Society; its powers and privileges, together with its laws and regulations, and a Copy of the Charter, will be found in the following pages.
