Excerpt from Thomas Campbell Reviewing beatties Life of Campbell in the Quarferly in 1849, Lockhart expressed the hope that no one would ever tell Campbell's story without making due acknow ledgment to 'the best stay of his declining period.' He would be a bold man who would think of doing so. As well might one expect to write a life of Johnson with out the aid of Boswell as expect to tell Campbell's story without reference to Dr Beattie. In addition to my acknowledgments to him, I have to express my in debtedness to Mr Cyrus Redding's 'reminiscences of Thomas Campbell, ' which, though badly put together, yet contain a mass of valuable information about the poet, especially in his more intimate relations. For the rest I have made considerable use of Campbell's corre spondence, and have, I trust, acquainted myself with all the more important references made to him in con temporary records, and in the writings of those who knew him. To several of my personal friends, par ticularly to Mr G. H. Ely, I am obliged for hints and helpful suggestions, which I gratefully acknowledge. J. C. H. Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Thomas Campbell Campbell was born to sing, if ever man was, for it was his nature to blossom into song, as 'tis a tree's to leaf itself in April. He literally lisped in numbers. Out of mere choice, his exercises at school and college were written in English heroics, after the manner of Pope. He was singularly. Excerpt from The Poems of Thomas Campbell The quarto edition of his poems, which Camp bell was allowed to print for his own profit, was the seventh. This was in 1803. The fourth edi tion, corrected and enlarged, was printed in Glas gow in 1800. His own edition is a fine specimen of Bensley's printing; but the engravings are of the poorest description of art. Excerpt from Literary Reminiscences and Memoirs of Thomas Campbell, Vol. 1 of 2 Among the works of the later poets of Great Britain, whether we consider their classical beauty or lyrical inspiration, none are more worthy of note than those of Thomas Campbell. Though Scottish born, like his countryman Thomson, he was eminently an English writer. His works are in that tongue unmingled with a dialect of which little can be said in praise, and though spoken between districts in which the English and Gaelic prevail, yet not well recognized by the people who speak either of those languages. His family belonged to the clan of the Campbells, one of the most powerful in the records of barbarian feudality, when lord and serf or villain divided a semi-civilized people throughout these Islands, too many remnants of the customs and laws of which still aflict both countries.
