An electrochemical method based on thermodynamic principles was used. The method consisted of the accurate measurement of the electromotive force of the following galvanic cells: Cu, Cu2S:H2, Pt and Cu, Cu2S:Ag2S, Ag. From this measured potential the standard electromotive force was calculated and from this standard electromotive force the standard free energy change of the cell reactions was determined. From these values and data from other sources for the free energy of formation of the sulfide ion, the cuprous ion, H2S gas and solid Ag2S the following thermodynamic constants of cuprous sulfides were calculated: 20.1 K cal/mole for free energy of formation 3.5 x 10 to the minus 48th power for the solubility product constant.
