In the past, active defense measures taken to combat the ballistic missile threat were concentrated on launch platform destruction or use of ground-based ballistic missile defense assets. In an era of declining overseas bases, limited strategic lift capability, and the Army and Air Force operating in an expeditionary role, naval forces will usually be the first units to respond to a crisis. Therefore, sea-based ballistic missile defense is a necessity. This paper provides an overview of the Navy's theater ballistic missile defense program. Specifically, it addresses the relationship between ballistic missiles and developing nations. It provides some background on the Joint Theater Missile Defense framework and the active defense programs being developed to support that framework. Most of the paper discusses the advantages of sea-based ballistic missile defense along with the Navy's two solutions to the ballistic missile threat, Navy Area Defense and Navy Theater-Wide Defense. At the turn of the century, the Navy will field a robust theater ballistic missile defense capability, centered on Aegis surface combatants, that is mobile, flexible, sustainable and cost effective.

The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Why buy a book you can download for free? We print this book so you don't have to. First you gotta find a good clean (legible) copy and make sure it's the latest version (not always easy). Some documents found on the web are missing some pages or the image quality is so poor, they are difficult to read. We look over each document carefully and replace poor quality images by going back to the original source document. We proof each document to make sure it's all there - including all changes. If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. It's much more cost-effective to just order the latest version from Amazon.com This book includes original commentary which is copyright material. Note that government documents are in the public domain. We print these large documents as a service so you don't have to. The books are compact, tightly-bound, full-size (8 1/2 by 11 inches), with large text and glossy covers. 4th Watch Publishing Co. is a HUBZONE SDVOSB. https: //usgovpub.com

DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Naval Theater Ballistic Missile Defense (NTBMD) will offer joint power projection forces robust TBMD capability by 2005. However, such defensive power projected from the sea is power projected from a unique and complex arena, where combat takes place in three competing environments which by their very nature cause conflicting tasking of limited assets. The tremendous promise of NTBMD must therefore be studied with this inherent operational complexity in mind. Naval Theater Ballistic Missile Defense can only realize its full potential if the Maritime Component Commander understands and addresses the key issues involved in its operational employment.

In parallel, the People's Republic of China is constantly modernizing its ballistic missile forces and is gearing up for a possible contingency with its self-proclaimed "high-tech adversaries". This work shows what drives Japan to deploy theater missile defenses and how the People's Republic of China is poised to be reacting to it.

Perhaps no security matter (with the exception of National Missile Defense) is as contentious globally as Theater Missile Defense (TMD). The question of U.S. assistance to Japan to develop and deploy a TMD is particularly complex and controversial.

The Committee for Naval Forces' Capability for Theater Missile Defense first convened in April 2000 and met approximately 2 days a month for 8 months. This report is based on the information presented to the committee during that period and on the committee members' accumulated experience and expertise in military operations, systems, and technologies.

On Sept. 17, 2009, the Obama Admin. announced that it wants to set aside the Bush Admin¿s. proposed European BMD architecture and instead pursue a different European BMD architecture that would involve a significant use of land- and sea-based SM-3 interceptors and the Aegis BMD system. The issue for Congress in this report is: What should be the role of sea-based systems in U.S. BMD, and are DoD¿s programs for sea-based BMD capabilities appropriately structured and funded? Tables.
