"A fantastic anthology by the true master of horror fiction. Highly recommended." — Book Nutter's Book Reviews "This is an excellent collection of Lovecraft's 'zombie' stories, which serves both as a treat to old fans and a sampler to people who haven't read Lovecraft before. I would highly recommend this collection." — Of Stacks and Cups Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, and other experts on horror fiction deem H. P. Lovecraft the master teller of weird tales. These six chilling stories ― all published between 1921 and 1933 ― offer compelling journeys into the land of the undead. The collection begins with "The Outsider," the tale of a recluse whose overwhelming loneliness emboldens him to seek out human contact. Subsequent stories include "Herbert West―Reanimator," written as a satire of Frankenstein and used as the source for a popular horror film; "In the Vault," in which an undertaker experiences supernatural revenge; "Cool Air," an account of a doctor's fanatical obsession with defying death; and "Pickman's Model," focusing on an artist's gallery of nightmares. "The Thing on the Doorstep" concludes the compilation with the compelling tale of a man whose body is preyed upon by a spirit that refuses to die. "Highly recommended. A great way to re-animate Lovecraft's standing as a master of the horror genre." —Looking for a Good Book "A delightfully horrific collection of tales that will thrill any horror fan!" — A Universe in Words

"Herbert West—Reanimator" is a story by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft. The story is the first to mention Lovecraft's fictional Miskatonic University. It is also notable as one of the first depictions of zombies as scientifically reanimated corpses, with animalistic and uncontrollable temperament. The narrator is a doctor who went to medical school with the titular character. Informing the reader that Herbert West has recently disappeared. The narrator goes on to explain how he met West when they were both young men in medical school, and the narrator became fascinated by West's theories, which postulated that the human body is simply a complex, organic machine, which could be "restarted." West initially tries to prove this hypothesis, but is unsuccessful. West realizes he must experiment on human subjects. The two men spirit away numerous supplies from the medical school and set up shop in an abandoned farmhouse. At first, they pay a group of men to rob graves for them, but none of the experiments are successful. West and the narrator go into grave robbing for themselves. One night, West and the narrator steal a corpse of a construction worker who died just that morning in an accident. They take it back to the farmhouse and inject it with West's solution, but nothing happens. Later an inhuman scream is heard from within the room containing the corpse which forces the two students to instinctively flee into the night. West accidentally tips over a lantern and the farmhouse catches fire. West and the narrator escape. The next day, however, the newspaper reads that a grave in potter's field had been molested violently the night before, as with the claws of a beast.

A collection of macabre tales from master of horror H.P. Lovecraft, including Reanimator--considered to be one of the zombie stories ever published Take a walk on the dark side and discover an array of disturbing, often forgotten horror classics from master of weird fiction, H. P. Lovecraft, best known for creating "The Call of Cthulhu." Herbert West is a medical student with an unusual passion: reanimating dead bodies. Consumed by his obsessive experiments, West eventually manages to bring people back to life using a special serum he has created. But he has no idea of the horror he will unleash with the zombies he creates--or rather, an army of monsters, who are out for revenge. This spine-chilling volume also collects some of Lovecraft's most striking stories about the undead and other terrifying people, from the traveler who takes refuge in an abandoned house, only to be confronted by an enigmatic man with a horrifying past in "The Picture in the House;" to the trio who fatally underestimate a local villager who seems more eccentric than harmless in "The Terrible Old Man." Discover the truth behind why the killing of cats is forbidden in one particular town in "The Cats of Ulthar" and what happens when a day-dreaming boy stumbles upon a tomb with his name on it in "The Tomb."

This Edition of H.P. Lovecraft's classic tale of scientific experimentation and zombies is well paired with a unique short story collection. H. P. Lovecraft was born in 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island, where he lived most of his life. He wrote many essays and poems early in his career, but gradually focused on the writing of horror stories, His relatively small corpus of fiction--three short novels and short stories--has nevertheless exercised a wide influence on subsequent work in the field, and he is regarded as the leading twentieth-century American author of supernatural fiction.
