Excerpt from Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, and Kindred Papers These papers I am anxious to put into the hands of your house, and, so far as regards the U. S., of your house exclu sively; not with any view to further emolument, but as an acknowledgment of the services which you have already ren dered me: namely, first, in having brought together so widely scattered a collection, - a difficulty which in my own hands by too painful an experience I had found from nervous de pression to be absolutely insurmountable; secondly, in hav ing made me a participator in the pecuniary profits of the American edition, without solicitation or the shadow of any expectation on my part, without any legal claim that I could plead, or equitable warrant in established usage, $01e and merely upon your own spontaneous motion. Some of these new papers, I hope, will not be without their value in the eyes of those who have taken an interest in the original series. But at all events, good or bad, they are now ten dered to the appropriation of your individual house, the, Micus. Ticknor and fields, according to the amplest extent of any power to make such a transfer that I may be found to possess by law or custom in America. This vintage book contains Thomas De Quincey's 1821 autobiographic account, "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater". Within this volume, De Quincey describes his addiction to opium and explains, in great detail, the effects that it had on him and his life. It was his first major work, and one that brought him fame almost overnight. Thomas Penson De Quincey (1785 - 1859) was a seminal English essayist. Many antiquarian books like this are increasingly rare and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, and high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

'I took it: - and in an hour, oh! Heavens! what a revulsion! what an upheaving, from its lowest depths, of the inner spirit! what an apocalypse of the world within me!' Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821) launched a fascination with drug use and abuse that has continued from his day to ours. In the Confessions De Quincey invents recreational drug taking, but he also details both the lurid nightmares that beset him in the depths of his addiction as well as his humiliatingly futile attempts to renounce the drug. Suspiria de Profundis centres on the deep afflictions of De Quincey's childhood, and examines the powerful and often paradoxical relationship between drugs and human creativity. In 'The English Mail-Coach', the tragedies of De Quincey's past are played out with horrifying repetitiveness against a backdrop of Britain as a Protestant and an imperial power. This edition presents De Quincey's finest essays in impassioned autobiography, together with three appendices that are highlighted by a wealth of manuscript material related to the three main texts. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
