Excerpt from The Works of Robert Bloomfield "Bloomfield, thy happy omen'd name, Ensures continuance to thy fame: Both sense and truth this verdict give, While fields shall bloom thy name shall live.' Very happy was this exclamation of Kirke White, himself one of the most genial, although most unhappy of poets, concerning an humble poet and shoemaker, whose descriptions of nature are in some respects better than those of Thomson, although they scarcely equal those of Ebenezer Elliott. Yet, in writing a sketch of the life of Robert Bloomfield, there is somehow a void. We have not here to deal with the eccentricities of a young untrained mind, as in the case of Chatterton; there is not the intense interest about the career of this poet, as there is in some of those who struggle up from the foul noisome dens of poverty, - struggle up, and strive for immortality in common with peer or viscount, Byron or Maidstone. Yet there is an interest attaching to Bloomfield, as there is an interest attaching to most men who are self-educated, and who, although not starving, have to labour hard for their daily bread. Let us look at him in London, through his brother's eyes: - "I have him in my mind's eye," says George Bloomfield, "a little boy; not bigger than boys generally are at twelve years old. Excerpt from Selections From the Correspondence of Robert Bloomfield, the Suffolk Poet My principle of selection was simply this - to take such letters, or parts of letters, as related to the literary labours of the poet; all others I have omitted, at least for the present. If this little volume should meet with encouragement, I may be induced to print the whole of the correspondence; for, as a rule, selections are not desirable; they are apt to give false impressions, though I think in the present instance I have not done anything calculated to mislead. I have adhered strictly to the rule I laid down for myself at the outset, and have only deviated in one or two instances, where I thought the letter would be of interest. The farmer's boy: a rural poem, in four books. By Robert Bloomfield By Robert Bloomfield The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Experience the birth of the modern novel, or compare the development of language using dictionaries and grammar discourses. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Excerpt from Views in Suffolk, Norfolk, and Northamptonshire: Illustrative of the Works of Robert Bloomfield; Accompanied With Descriptions; To Which Is Annexed a Memoir of the Poet's Life The very flattering reception which the Illustrations of Cowper and Burns have experienced from the Public, encourages a hope that the same liberal patronage will be extended to the present undertaking; and though we are aware that it is a maxim generally received, that living authors are of comparatively small consideration, we are happy to know that the world have, in the instance of "The Farmer's Boy," conferred on its author that generous countenance and support which perhaps equal merit has in former times sighed for in vain. To Capel Lofft, Esq., of Troston Hall, we are much indebted for his useful communications. Mrs. Lathbury, of Levermere Magna; the Rev. Robert Fellowes, of Fakenham; and Mr. Robert Bloomfield, have equal claims upon our gratitude. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Farmer's Boy Bear me through regions where gay Fancy dwells; But mould to Truth's fair form what Memory tells. Live, trifling incidents, and grace my song, That to the humblest menial belong To him whose drudgery unheeded goes, His joys unreckon'd as his cares or woes; Though joys and cares in every path are sown, And youthful minds have feelings of their own, Quick-springing sorrows, transient as the dew, Delights from trifles, trifles ever new. 'twas thus with Giles: meek, fatherless, and poor Labour his portion, but he felt no more; No stripes, no tyranny his steps pursued; His life was constant, cheerful servitude Strange to the world, he wore a bashful look, The fields his study, Nature was his book; And, as revolving Seasons changed the scene From heat to cold, tempestuous to serene, Though every change still varied his employ, Yet each new duty brought its share of joy.
