From the dawn of time, ruby and sapphire have both attracted and fascinated humans in ways that few other items could. While objects of desire are found throughout the natural world, physical beauty is too often ephemeral. From the allure of a man, woman, flower or butterfly, through the fleeting moments of a sunset, there is little that lasts and practically nothing that can be passed down to our descendants. The exception is precious stones. Not only are they the most durable creations of mother nature, but their visual splendor is truly eternal. In this companion to his 2013 book, Ruby & Sapphire--A Collector's Guide, Richard Hughes examines these gems from the gemological standpoint, delving into these gems not just from the aesthetic, but also from the scientific point of view. The product of nearly 40 years of firsthand experience, it covers every aspect of the subject from A-Z. History, sources, prices, quality analysis, synthetics and treatments, everything is here. Ruby & Sapphire--A Gemologist's Guide represents the most comprehensive book ever written on a single precious stone. With over 1000 photos, maps and illustrations and 3500 references, it is nothing less than a tour-de-force of gemological scholarship.

Excerpt from The White Sapphire: A Mystery Romance Through the heavy growths of woodbine that screened the end of the porch to which she had re treated, the slanting rays of the late afternoon sun broke in scattered flecks and splashes, checkering the floor and the wicker lounging-chairs, the comfortable length of the couch, piled with cushions, and the light matting that stretched across the porch. In the stillness of the summer afternoon, among the white clematis that grew entangled with the wood bine, sounded the droning of bees. A cloth lay spread upon the table, where a tea-service was already placed. The broad, low windows opening upon the veranda gave a glimpse of darkened, cool interiors, with glints of light from gilt-framed canvases and the polished surface of furniture. Evelyn Winthrop brought her chair abruptly to a halt. Leaning forward, she peered through the woodbine to note the progress of the rider and his horse. I believe he'd let Patsy crawl if she knew how, she fumed. But slowly as the pair advanced, they had drawn perceptibly nearer and were now in full view of the house. The girl again sprang to her feet and, running to the head of the steps, sought to attract the horseman's attention by a vigorous fluttering of the yellow telegram. Whether or not he understood the signal as a summons to hasten, his answer was only a leisurely wave of the chamois gloved hand in which he held his cigarette. It was gracefully, cavalierly done; but he made no effort to increase his speed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
