This book provides wide-ranging information on current clinical and scientific knowledge on the various aspects of fissure sealing. Trends in the epidemiology of caries are first examined, followed by thorough description of the morphology of pits and fissures and types of sealant. The role of sealants in the prevention of caries is discussed. Diagnostic parameters are presented, along with step-by-step descriptions of clinical procedures for fissure sealing. Chapters are also included on alternative techniques of fissure sealing, sealing of carious fissures, and therapeutic fissure sealing. The final chapter in the book focuses on the cost effectiveness of the procedure. Tooth surfaces with pits and fissures are particularly vulnerable to caries development. Sealants were developed to help manage these sites of the tooth and safeguard the surfaces from decay. This book has been written by acknowledged experts in the field. It will be of value for all dental professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of current knowledge on the science and the clinical application of pit and fissure sealants.

Dental caries is a multi factorial, bacterial, chronic infection that affects millions of people in the world and has become a public health problem. Also referred to as tooth decay, this disease is one of the most common disorders throughout the world, second only to the common cold. Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States and is 5 to 7 times more common than asthma. According to the World Oral Health Report in 2003, dental caries affect 60-80% of school children and a vast majority of adults. If left untreated, dental caries can result in cavities forming and, eventually, tooth loss. Although the prevalence and severity of dental caries has decreased over the years, this disease can be controlled better with proper fluoride exposure. Fluoride dentifrices have been shown in numerous clinical trials to be effective anticaries agents and have been recognized as a major cause of the remarkable decline in caries prevalence in many developed countries. Dentifrices have been widely adopted around the world as the principle means of delivering topical fluoride and obtaining caries preventive benefits. Although there is documented literature on the use of topical fluorides, the issue needs to be further researched based on the recent documeanted literature and guidelines regarding use of topical fluorides. Hence, the present review was conducted with the aim to review the available literature on the use and effectiveness of different topical fluorides used in dentistry.

Dental caries is the most common chronic human disease. Globally, WHO reports caries prevalence in school-age children at 60-90%. 2/3rd of the total caries experienced in children are on the occlusal surface in pit fissures; inspite of the fact that only 12.5% of the surfaces are occlusal. The best positive way to treat ailment is the - Prevention of diseases. The systemic and topical fluoride protects the teeth from decay, but relative effect of fluoride is least for pit and fissure. The preventive function of a pit and fissure sealant is achieved by the adherence of the material to the acid etched enamel surface thus physically occluding the pit and fissure, which prevents lodging of fermentable carbohydrates and colonization of bacteria. As long as the sealant remains intact, there will be very less chances of development of caries beneath it. Pit and fissure sealants are economical and adequate means for prevention of dental caries on occlusal surface of molars and premolars and to maintain dental health. Usage of sealants are advocated in various public health prevention measures and had been proved success.

Dental caries the most common chronic childhood disease is the primary cause of tooth loss.In spite of considerable improvement in the dental health of children, the incidence of decayed fissures in the first permanent molars is still high. Caries in pits and fissures has responded less to routine preventive methods than caries on smooth surfaces.Special preventive efforts are needed if further caries reduction is to be obtained.Application of fissure sealants and fluoride varnishes are two preventive procedures for dental caries developed since the 1960's .This study compares the effectiveness of fissure sealant and fluoride varnish in prevention of occlusal caries.
