Excerpt from The Truth About China and Japan The present volume has been written primarily to allow the ordinary reader to see at a glance what the position really is today in Eastern Asia, and to explain precisely why there should be conflict between China and Japan. The essential point - which the writer first insisted upon at great length in The Fight for the Republic in China - is that a dual policy, one policy for the East for the West; that she uses military power and secret loans to advance the first, and diplomacy and publicity the second and that this intricate matter can be understood only by exploring the history of the remote past and linking it up with what is taking place to-day. The fact that the Imperial Conference, which has just concluded its labours, failed to reach any unanimous conclusions on the subject of Japan gives additional point to the arguments which follow, and demands that the important group of documents in the Appendix - particularly the anglo-japanese Treaty - be studied in the light of this new development. Excerpt from The Truth About China and Japan The present volume carries the writer's studies regarding the problem of the Far East one step further. It has been written primarily to allow the ordinary reader to see at a glance what the position really is to-day in Eastern Asia, and to explain precisely why there should be conflict between China and Japan. The essential point - which the writer first insisted upon at great length in 'The Fight for the Republic in China' - is that Japan has a double policy, one policy for the East and another for the West; that she uses military power and secret loans to advance the first, and diplomacy and publicity the second; and that this intricate matter can be understood only by exploring the history of the remote past. The writer's thanks are due to the publishers of the magazine Asia for permission to reprint these essays in book-form. Excerpt from China and Japan On November 6, 1900, Miss Emma Penton Kendrick, of Louisville, Kentucky, was married to Doctor John D. Trawick, of Nashville, Tennessee. They left immediately for San Francisco, from which place they sailed for their new home in China. Doctor Trawick is an associate surgeon in the Methodist Hospital at Soochow. Her letters from this far-off Eastern land were so very inter esting that many friends requested that they be given to the public, and some of them were accordingly published in a leading newspaper of Louisville, her native city. Many complimentary things were said of them, and many requests were made that they be put in a more permanent form. Some few of these are printed as an appendix to this book.' It is in response to these requests that this little volume appears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from China, Japan and the USA Because the population of Shantung is directly confronted with an immense amount of just such evidence, it cannot take seriously the professions of vague diplomatic utterances. What foreign nation is going to intervene to enforce Chinese rights in such a case as Po-shan? Which one is going effectively to call the attention of Japan to such evidences of its failure to carry out its promise? Yet the accumulation of precisely such seem ingly 'petty incidents, and not any single dramatic great wrong, will secure Japan's economic and political domination of Shantung. It is for this reason that foreigners resident in Shantung, no matter in what part, say that they see no sign whatever that Japan is going to get out; that, on the contrary, everything points to a determination to consolidate her position. How long ago was the Portsmouth treaty signed, and what were its nominal pledges about evacuation of Manchurian territory? Excerpt from China, Japan and Korea IN a book published at the end Of the year of the abdication of the Manchu dynasty and the establish ment of the Chinese Republic, I endeavoured to trace the causes, and to predict some Of the results, of that upheaval. Before proceeding to discuss the history Of the eight years which have elapsed Since that book was written, I propose to revert briefly to some of the views which it expressed and to some of the opinions which it evoked, in China and abroad. Eight years are all too brief a space of time in the life of a nation to afford any conclusive evidence as to the direction Of its political evolution; nevertheless, the course of events since 1912, and the actual position of affairs at Peking and in the provinces afford, I think, good ground for certain useful conclusions in regard to questions upon which opinion has widely differed, and still differs, in England and America. Of these, the most important is, firstly, the general question of the fitness Of the Chinese people for 2self government and, secondly, the question of Young China's aspirations and achievements in the organisation and working of representative institutions. Excerpt from A Little Journey to China and Japan The Chinese proudly boast that their government is the oldest on the globe; that China was a nation five thousand years before the United States was born; that they have books from three to four thousand years old; that they used the printing -press a thousand years before it was used in Europe. More than four thousand years ago these pe0p1e knew how to make brick from clay, how to build canals, how to sing, and play on musical instruments, how to write, and how to calculate the movements of the stars; also, they had domestic animals, cultivated the fields, and had forms of worship and government. They know little of modern inventions and ma chinery, but they have a wonderful skill in handicraft, and their artists and artisans are in many lines not equaled by those of any other country. They tell us, also, that their race numbers more than one-fourth of all the people on the globe, and that their territory includes more than acres of ground, or more than the United States.
