Statistical modeling is a critical tool in scientific research. This book provides comprehensive explanations of the concepts and philosophy of statistical modeling, together with a wide range of practical and numerical examples. The authors expect this work to be of great value not just to statisticians but also to researchers and practitioners in various fields of research such as information science, computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, economics, marketing and environmental science. It’s a crucial area of study, as statistical models are used to understand phenomena with uncertainty and to determine the structure of complex systems. They’re also used to control such systems, as well as to make reliable predictions in various natural and social science fields.

This volume is devoted to models and methods in multiple objectives decision making. The importance of the multiple dimensions of decision making was first recognised during the 1960s and since then progress has been made in that theoretical or application oriented contributions may now be categorized under two main headings:- Multiattribute Decision Making (MADM) which concerns the sorting, the ranking or the evaluation of objects of choice according to several criteria and Multiobjective Decision Making (MODM) which deals with the vector optimization in mathematical programming. The above are also presented in the context of various applications, namely banking, environment, health, manpower, media, portfolio and traffic control, resulting in a book for a wide variety of readers.

This book aims to provide an in-depth understanding of linguistic meaning, a central theme in twentieth-century philosophy, and its various connections with criteria. Part I examines four major recent theories of meaning, linguistic rules and conventions, and practices. In Part II, after an extended analysis of the concept of criterion against the backdrop of Ludwig Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations and the post-Wittgenstein period, various connections between criteria and meaning are revealed in relation to both non-evaluative and evaluative concepts. The last chapter details various sorts of error and confusion in a host of important philosophical views resulting from an improper understanding of criteria, conditions, and evidence.

Both the 'First International Summer School on Multiple Criteria Decision Making Methods, Applications and Software' and the present volume of readings could only be realised with assistance and support from many sides. We would like to express our gratitude to all those who have contributed to making a success of the first of a hopefully long series of summer schools in this field and to all those who have contribut. ed to the present volume. First of all we are grateful for the financial means supplied by a long list of sponsors, the most important of which are mentioned on the copyright page. Next, we are grateful to the members of the organising committee, Anna Ostanello and Giovanni Zambruno. Since this is the first of what will become a series of summer schools, the chairman of the organising committee, Benedetto Matarazzo, will start this volume with a brief account of the school held in Acireale. The programme committee consisted of Jean Fichefet, Anna Ostanello, Bernard Roy, Jaap Spronk (chairman) and Stanley Zionts. Their valuable contribu tion is gratefully acknowledged, as is the contribution of all the lecturers at the school. Of course, a school is not only made by its teachers, but just as much by its students. The primary aim of a school is to teach and to stimulate the students.

This book presents the multi-criteria approach to decision support, as well as the various multi-criteria tools to help avoid multi-objective optimization. The book is intended as a tool for understanding the multi-criteria tools for decision support and modeling in mathematical programming. It helps to structure models, to easily model complex constraints, to have a basic modeling guide for any multi-criteria system and to better understand models already existing in the literature. The book is structured in the same order as components of the methodology, established in a multi-criteria optimization problem. It introduces the elements of the actors, the decision-making activity under criteria, calculations, specifications and objective criterion.

It was a great honor and privilege to organize the Tenth International Conference on Multiple Criteria Decision Making at Taipei, Taiwan, July 19-24, 1992. Accompanying this unique honor and privilege there was a series of complex, challenging problems. Each of them involved multiple criteria, fuzziness, uncertainty, unknown yet dynamic changes. The problem sometimes cost us sleep because we wanted to do the very best job, but in reality it seemed to be impossible. The following are the main goals of the organization committee: (i) inviting all prominent and distinguished MCDM scholars around the world to participate in the conference and to present their up-to-date research results, (ii) providing financial aid and hospitality so that each invited speaker can have free room and board at a five star hotel, (iii) creating an environment so that all participants can freely exchange their ideas, and build friendships around the world. Due to the enthusiastic participation of the prominent scholars, the generous support of the Taiwan government, universities, the Industrial leaders and nonprofit foundations, and the active problem solving attitude and doing of the organizational committee and the Habitual Domain (HD) club, the conference was a great success.
