Excerpt from Modern Tariff History: Germany United States France The first edition of this book, published in 1904, was based upon lectures delivered to the students of the London School of Economics and Political Science in the course of that year. They were an attempt to provide a brief and, so far as possible, unpartisan sketch of the development of tariff policy in Germany, the United States, and France, and of the forces, political and economic, which have deter mined its course. Excerpt from The Revolt of Protectionists in the United States Against Their Tariff On March 19, 1910, after four days of hard fighting in the House of Representatives, the Democrats combined with the Republicans, who opposed the course of Mr. Cannon on the Aldrich Bill, by a majority of 45 deprived him of his power to appoint the committees of the House and designate the chairmen thereof, a power possessed by the Speaker almost from the beginning of our Government. Excerpt from The History of Tariff Administration in the United States: From Colonial Times to the McKinley Administrative Bill Taxes are necessary for all governments, and the method of their collection has always been the problem of administrators. Let us take it for granted as long since settled that indirect taxation is the best form from an administrative standpoint. Its most frequent and productive application is now found in the taxation of imports. Import taxes, striking the goods in transit, meet them at their weakest point; the machinery of collection can be made simple and accurate in its workings, while the expense of collection may be reduced to a minimum. Excerpt from The History of Protective Tariff Laws The arguments with reference to the general aspects of the subject have been long since exhausted. It would be as difficult to add any new ones as it would be to write an original essay upon the causes that led to our national independence. In arrangement alone can there be any thing like originality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Readings in the Economic History of the United States The need of providing large college classes with collateral reading in a course on the economic history of the United States has led to the preparation of this book. Its purpose has therefore been pri marily to provide a sufficient body of material to supplement the more systematic text book and lectures. This material has, with only one or two exceptions, been drawn from contemporary sources; in the later periods, with the growing wealth of such material, Official documents have been largely used. But in every period these documents have been supplemented by the more human and the more illuminating comments of travelers, Observers, and others who were entitled to speak authoritatively. Where controversial matters have been treated, every effort has been made to present both sides fairly. In the face of the great amount of material available for such a work as this the main task of the editors has necessarily been one of selection, and in performing this task they have endeavored to present a comprehensive yet balanced picture of the economic activities and development of each period. Agriculture, manufactures, tariff, com merce, transportation, money and banking, labor, and the movement of the population have, each in turn, been given due emphasis in the panoramic picture here unfolded. AS among the different periods it is believed that a balance has been maintained that will commend itself to teachers of American history. TO the period from 1600 to 1808 about one fourth of the book is devoted; one half to that from 1808 to 1860; and the remaining fourth to the period since the Civil War.
