"A provocative new author. A fascinating debut novel. Read it!” —Jeff VanderMeer In Rachel Heng's debut set in near future New York City—where lives last three hundred years and the pursuit of immortality is all-consuming—Lea must choose between her estranged father and her chance to live forever. Lea Kirino is a “Lifer,” which means that a roll of the genetic dice has given her the potential to live forever—if she does everything right. And Lea is an overachiever. She’s a successful trader on the New York exchange—where instead of stocks, human organs are now bought and sold—she has a beautiful apartment, and a fiancé who rivals her in genetic perfection. And with the right balance of HealthTechTM, rigorous juicing, and low-impact exercise, she might never die. But Lea’s perfect life is turned upside down when she spots her estranged father on a crowded sidewalk. His return marks the beginning of her downfall as she is drawn into his mysterious world of the Suicide Club, a network of powerful individuals and rebels who reject society’s pursuit of immortality, and instead choose to live—and die—on their own terms. In this future world, death is not only taboo; it’s also highly illegal. Soon Lea is forced to choose between a sanitized immortal existence and a short, bittersweet time with a man she has never really known, but who is the only family she has left in the world.

Robert Louis Stevenson is best known for his The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and his two novels that would now be classified as Young Adult literature, Treasure Island and Kidnapped. The Scottish author had an uncanny talent for both adventure tales and character development, a combination so rare in literary history. His Long John Silver remains the archetype of the kindly pirate, including Captain Jack Sparrow of the immensely popular Pirates of the Caribbean movie series. Stevenson was a sickly man, and even as a child he spent much of his time in bed. These hours were not wasted, however, as the young man read voraciously and developed a keen sense of literary style. Stevenson went on to study law as a backup to his literary career, and he soon began to publish essays, short stories, and poems in various journals. Despite his poor health, Stevenson also traveled widely, enjoying a rather Bohemian life of the late Victorian world. The Suicide Club was first published in London Magazine in 1878 and later in his first collection of stories New Arabian Nights. It introduces Stevenson's detective, Prince Florizel of Bohemia, a reference to Shakespeare's play A Winter's Tale, and his companion Colonel Geraldine. The three stories in this collection revolve around Florizel's infiltration of the underground Suicide Club, an institution for desperate men who want to end their lives but fear the consequences of suicide for their family and friends. Each part has its own mystery and only in the last story does Florizel finally upend the treacherous group.Written nine years before the first Sherlock Holmes story, Stevenson helped to build the burgeoning detective genre in English. Although Florizel is not as well known today as Arthur Conan Doyle's creation, the contemporary genre owes as much to Stevenson as it does to Doyle himself.

Three misfits – close to genius, close to the brink – come together in a desperate love triangle in this compelling novel. When Bright is suddenly catapulted to fame, he can’t cope with the pressure. He decides to end it all by jumping from the 20th floor of a high-rise on his twentieth birthday. He’s saved by the quirky, eccentric Gibby, and soon the two boys find themselves in a love triangle, vying for the attention of the beautiful, brilliant, unreachable Lace, and also trying to protect her from harm. The three misfits – close to genius, close to the brink – travel from England to a beautiful old spa town in Bavaria. Here, in an experimental institution under the colourful Dr Geoffrey, the pressure mounts. Soon it’s no longer clear who’s in the greatest danger, and who needs saving the most. Unflinching, but tender and often humorous, The Suicide Club is an examination of the last taboo in our society – as well as our deep human desire to connect. It explores why we feel the need to extinguish our lives, how we can pull back from the edge, and how – by saving ourselves – we can sometimes also save the people we love.

The people in these eight interlaced stories are "bound together by the worst sort of grief," the kind that can devour you after someone close takes his or her own life. Wednesday evenings in Hope Springs, Oklahoma, offer the usual middle-American options: TV, rec league sports, eating out, and church. For Slater, Holly, and SueAnn, it is the night their suicide survivors group meets. They once felt little else in common, aside from a curiosity about Jane, the group facilitator, but now they understand how deeply they need each other. SueAnn mourns for her son, who hanged himself. Slater is left impotent by the loss of his father, who deliberately overdosed on pills and alcohol. Holly can't let go of her boyfriend, who shot himself. But if suicide has stolen their capacity to laugh, it has honed their sense of absurdity. Even in the darkest undertones of what her characters think and say, Toni Graham reveals a piercingly funny cast, short on patience with themselves and the incongruous pieties of daily life in the Heartland. If they weren't already Hope Springs outsiders, suicide has made sure of it. Failing to fit in, they try to change, if only for themselves: Holly joins an online dating service; SueAnn works on her vocabulary; Slater gets liposuction. They keep moving forward and backward and, when their paths cross outside of their regular Wednesday meetings, sometimes a little sideways.
