The resolutions will serve at least to shew the deep interest of the Committee in the religious instruction of this class of our population, and by being thus presented to the Church, may serve per haps to awaken it to a deeper sense of the important interests involved in the field of Domestic Missions. Excerpt from The Spirit of Missions, Vol. 9: Edited for the Board of Missions of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America It was, indeed, a high festival to the Church tn the United States. An Ameri can Episcopate was secured at last. Two native citizens were duly consecrated by the archbishops and bishops of England, successors of the apostles of the Lord. At the instance, not of the Church at large in America, but of the Clergy of Connecticut, the Rev. Dr. Seabury had previously been induced to repair to Eng land for consecration. But as the administration had some apprehension of em broiling themselves with the American government, the sovereignty of which they had so recentlv acknowledged, and as the bishops were doubtful how far an act of some clergymen, in their individual capacities, would be acquiesced in by their respective flocks, Dr. Seabury did not receive his Episcopate in England, but applied to the non-juring bishops of Scotland, and in November, 1784, was conse crated by them at Aberdeen.
