This is a collection of long narrative poems written in a characteristically vivid and descriptive way. In her preface, Ms. Preston remarks that songs are made from joyful moments. The shadows of the title are an acknowledgment of the vast number of humans who have no joy to sing of.

The Singing Man A Book of Songs and Shadows By Josephine Preston Peabody THE SINGING MAN I He sang above the vineyards of the world. And after him the vines with woven handsClambered and clung, and everywhere unfurled Triumphing green above the barren lands;Till high as gardens grow, he climbed, he stood, Sun-crowned with life and strength, and singing toil, And looked upon his work; and it was good: The corn, the wine, the oil. He sang above the noon. The topmost cleft That grudged him footing on the mountain scarsHe planted and despaired not; till he left His vines soft breathing to the host of stars. He wrought, he tilled; and even as he sang, The creatures of his planting laughed to scornThe ancient threat of deserts where there sprang The wine, the oil, the corn! He sang not for abundance.-Over-lords Took of his tilth. Yet was there still to reap, The portion of his labor; dear rewards Of sunlit day, and bread, and human sleep. He sang for strength; for glory of the light. He dreamed above the furrows, 'They are mine!'When all he wrought stood fair before his sight With corn, and oil, and wine. Truly, the light is sweet Yea, and a pleasant thing It is to see the Sun. And that a man should eat His bread that he hath won;- (So is it sung and said), That he should take and keep, After his laboring, The portion of his labor in his bread, His bread that he hath won; Yea, and in quiet sleep, When all is done. He sang; above the burden and the heat, Above all seasons with their fitful grace;Above the chance and change that led his feet To this last ambush of the Market-place.'Enough for him, ' they said-and still they say- 'A crust, with air to breathe, and sun to shine; He asks no more!'-Before they took away The corn, the oil, the wine. He sang. No more he sings now, anywhere. Light was enough, before he was undone. They knew it well, who took away the air, -Who took away the sun;Who took, to serve their soul-devouring greed, Himself, his breath, his bread-the goad of toil;-Who have and hold, before the eyes of Need, The corn, the wine, -the oil! Truly, one thing is sweet Of things beneath the Sun;This, that a man should earn his bread and eat, Rejoicing in his work which he hath done. What shall be sung or said Of desolate deceit. When others take his bread; His and his children's bread?- And the laborer hath none. This, for his portion now, of all that he hath done. He earns; and others eat. He starves;-they sit at meat Who have taken away the Sun. II Seek him now, that singing Man.Look for him, Look for himIn the mills, In the mines;Where the very daylight pines, -He, who once did walk the hills...! The crooner Rudy Vallée's soft, intimate, and sensual vocal delivery simultaneously captivated millions of adoring fans and drew harsh criticism from those threatened by his sensitive masculinity. Although Vallée and other crooners reflected the gender fluidity of late-1920s popular culture, their challenge to the Depression era's more conservative masculine norms led cultural authorities to stigmatize them as gender and sexual deviants. In Real Men Don't Sing Allison McCracken outlines crooning's history from its origins in minstrelsy through its development as the microphone sound most associated with white recording artists, band singers, and radio stars. She charts early crooners’ rise and fall between 1925 and 1934, contrasting Rudy Vallée with Bing Crosby to demonstrate how attempts to contain crooners created and dictated standards of white masculinity for male singers. Unlike Vallée, Crosby survived the crooner backlash by adapting his voice and persona to adhere to white middle-class masculine norms. The effects of these norms are felt to this day, as critics continue to question the masculinity of youthful, romantic white male singers. Crooners, McCracken shows, not only were the first pop stars: their short-lived yet massive popularity fundamentally changed American culture.

Back again, now, by some impulse of the dog which hasn’t had any day. It is winter now, I remember, Singing Mouse, and I am walking by the shore of the great Inland Seas. There is snow on the ground. The trees look black in contrast as you gaze up from the beach against the high bank. It is cold. It is dark. There is a shiver in the air. There are icicles in the sky. Something is flying through the trees, but silent as if it came out of a grave. I have been walking, I know. I have walked a million miles, and I’m tired. My legs are stiff, and my legging has frozen fast to my overshoe; I remember that. And so I sit down—right here, you know—and look out over the lake—just over there, you see. The ice reaches out from the shore into the lake a long way; and it is covered with snow, and looks white. I can follow that white glimmer in a long, long curve to the right—twenty miles or more, maybe. Yes, it is cold. But ah! what is that out there, and what is it doing? It is setting all the long white curves of ice afire. It is throwing down hammered silver in a broad path, out there on the water. Those are not ripples. That is silver! There will be angels walking on that pathway before long! That is not the moon coming up over the lake! It is the swinging open, by some careless angel’s mischance, of the door of the White City of Rest!... How old, how sore a man climbed up the steep bank! There were white fields. In the distance a dog barked. Away across the fields a bright and cheery light shone out from a window, and as the moon rose higher, it showed the house which held the light. It was not a large house, but it seemed to be a home. Home!—what is that? I wondered; and I remember that I pulled at the frozen legging, and moved, with pain, the limbs grown tired and sore.
