This volume contains the contributions to the workshop "The Semiotics of Cellular Communication in The Immune System" which took place at "11 Ciocco" in the hills north of Lucca, Italy, September ~-12, 1986. The workshop was the first meeting of what we hope will be a broad consideration of communication among lymphocytes, and focused on the new interdisciplinary branch of biological sciences, immunosemiotics. It is in the realm of the possible, if not the probable, that in the future a number of scientists larger than the thirty present at 11 Ciocco will find immunosemiotics to fill a need in scientific thinking and a gap between biology and the humanities. This might lead to growth and flourishing of the branch, and in this case the first conference and this first book could be blessed by the impalpable qual ity of becoming "historical", if in an admittedly 1 imited sense. Just in case this should happen the organizers/editors think it wise to set the record straight at this particular time, about the sequen~e of events and circumstances that crystallized the archeology of the "11 Liocco" gathering. They feel a sort of obligation to this endeavor: it has happened all too often that innocent historians have been left in utter confusion by the careless founders of new religions, schisms, revolutions, et cetera, who simply forget to jot down the facts before the whirlwind of time engulfs them in its fog.

As the outermost barrier of the body, the skin protects against bacterial, viral, and environmental assaults. To reach this end, epidermal and dermal resident cells have evolved intricate communication networks, involving innate and adaptive immune cells, epithelial cells, and neurons. In disease states, skin resident cells are aided by recruited immune cells, such as neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils. Initially, these cell types were studied in isolation, but recent focus has shifted towards understanding how physical interactions between cells and communication initiated by soluble mediators facilitate coordinated immune responses in the cutaneous microenvironment to maintain homeostasis, preserve barrier function, and, effectively clear bacterial, viral or fungal assailants. In this Research Topic, the goal is to highlight recent advances in cutaneous biology and immunology to provide insight into the cellular networks underlying the generation and regulation of cutaneous immune responses. Recent advances in this area have described novel pathways regulating skin-resident memory T cells, keratinocytes-immune cell interactions, and the relationships between sensory neurons and immune cells in the skin. Cumulatively, these studies provide a framework for understanding the complex interactions that are necessary for maintaining host protection, and homeostasis and reveal novel targetable pathways for patients with skin disease.

How do you discriminate yourself from other people? This question must sound odd to you since you easily recognize others at a glance and, without any effort, would not mistake them for yourself. However, it is not always easy for some people to discriminate themselves from others. For example, patients with schi- phrenia often talk with “others” living inside themselves. Thus it is likely that n- mally your brain actively recognizes and remembers the information belonging to yourself and discriminates it from the information provided by others, although you are not conscious of it. This brain function must have been particularly important for most animals to protect their lives from enemies and for species to survive through evolution. Similarly, higher organisms have also acquired their immune system through evolution that discriminates nonself pathogens and self-body to protect their lives from pathogens such as bacteria or viruses. The brain system may distinguish integrated images of self and nonself created from many inputs, such as vision, sound, smell, and others. The immune system recognizes and distinguishes a variety of structural features of self and nonself components. The latter actually include almost everything but self: for example, bacteria, viruses, toxins, pollens, chemicals, transplanted organs, and even tumor cells derived from self-tissue. To this end the immune system recruits different kinds of immune cells, such as B and T lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, dendritic cells, and macrophages.
