This is the ninth edition of the Salem Directory, with a business directory of South Danvers, Massachusetts. The general directory contains the names of 6,567 people listed in alphabetical order. Each entry gives the resident's name, occupation and address. 1,669 names were added to this edition and 1,232 names were struck out, making for an increase of 437 names. The Business Directory provides a list of approximately 165 professions and the names of the traders listed alphabetically along with their addresses. Following the Business Directory are sections describing the city government of Salem and those who held office at the municipal level, Justices of the Peace, Notaries Public, physicians, courts, taxation in Salem, post offices, congressional districts, railroads, military, schools and teachers, churches, clergymen, banks and insurance companies. The last part of this book contains a vast assortment of interesting advertisements divided into three sections: one for Boston, one for Salem and one for South Danvers. There is an index at the start of this section, which acts as a table of contents for the advertisements. The South Danvers Directory is located at the end of the book after all of the advertisements for Boston and Salem. It lists the town officers in 1858, the banks, churches, post office and then the business directory. Complete with a map of Salem, Massachusetts, from 1859 and a new surname index.
