Excerpt from The Sabbath: With Sabbath Walks, and Other Poems In the first of the following Poems, I have endeavoured to describe some of the pleasures and duties peculiar to the seventh day. The appropriation of so considerable a portion of human life to religious services, to domestic enjoyment, and to meditative leisure, is a most important branch of the divine dispensation. The extent of the boon appears in its most striking light, when we consider the days of rest in any given period, as accumulated into one sum. - He who has seen threescore and ten years, has lived ten years of Sabbaths. Excerpt from The Poor Man's Sabbath, and Other Poems These extended views, however, which, in a dis sertation on the Sabbath, would a brd matter of curious and edifying inquiry, or in a poem, embracing the subject in general, might be made the ground work of much fanciful and pathetic description, do not fall within the design of the followmg poem, which did not extend farther than to point out a few of the most obvious of its effects upon the child of penury and toil. Nor, perhaps, can the Sabbath be viewed in any more interesting aspect. To him whose daily employment is rather mental than corporeal, though, if he be a man of piety, it brings a blessed relief in changing the subjects of contemplation, from the objects of time and sense, that are seen and perishing, to the glories of Emmanuel, which, though for the present unseen, are eternal, yet it breaks in but little upon the uniform tenor of his life; while to him whose every day is ease and recreation, it must be a day of self-denial, and, instead of adding externally to his comforts, must have an air of monkish severity, or at least of unsocial reserve.
