Excerpt from Journal of the Rhode Island Institute of Instruction for 1845-6, Vol. 1 The law respecting public schools was found scattered through upwards of fortk acts of a general or special nature; and in all that relates to t e powers and duties 0 school districts, was so imperfect as to preclude any decisive action on the part of the inhabitants of any district, towards the improvement of their schools or school-houses, without some special legislation in their favor. The new act is so framed as to render any reference to a particular part a matter of great facility; and occu ies less space than the special acts re sting to the building 0 school houses alone, passed since 1839. Excerpt from The Rhode Island Educational Magazine, Vol. 2: 1853-54 The Commissioner of Public Schools presents the annual report required of him by law. The accompanying abstracts of the returns from the several towns will inform the Legislature in regard to the apportionment and expenditure of the public money, and the statistics of the schools The returns for the last year were more exact and full than those of the previous year; and it is hoped that the returns for the present year will be complete. It is gratifying to perceive that a large number of the towns are increasing their appropriations for schools, and it will be for the wisdom of the Legislature to determine whether the time has not arrived, or will not soon arrive, when public opinion and the condition of the treasury will justify and sustain an increase of our State appropriation.
