Excerpt from The Religion of the Primitives My career as an African missionary, interrupted by a short sojourn in Europe and another in India, began in 1877 on the eastern coast. I brought with me all the current ideas as to the black populations: fetichist peoples, without religion or morality, with no family life, stupidly adoring animals, trees, and stones. Excerpt from Religions of Primitive Peoples: 1896-1897 At this conference Prof. Jastrow submitted a plan for establishing popular lecture courses on the his torical study of religions by securing the co-opera tion of existing institutions and lecture associations, such as the Lowell, Brooklyn, and Peabody Insti tutes, the University Lecture Association of Phila delphia, and some of our colleges and universities. Each course, according to this plan, was to consist of from six to eight lectures, and the engagement of lecturers, choice of subjects, and so forth were to be in the hands of a committee chosen from the differ ent cities, and representing the various institutions and associations participating. This general scheme met with the cordial approval of the conference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Primitives and the Supernatural Researches such as these inevitably evoke in the mind vast problems, raised long ago and still vehemently discussed, such as: Have primitives a religion? If so, what? Do they enter tain the idea of a Supreme God? And so forth. These re searches seem indeed to border upon such questions, but they never enter into the discussion. Rightly speaking, they cannot do so, for they are upon another plane altogether. It may possibly be urged that in refusing to pose such prob lems and, as a consequence, to discuss their solution, I am thereby implicitly rejecting certain among them rather than others, and that I thus eliminate them by omission. Not at all. How can I take sides in a debate that I know nothing about? It is not this or that answer to the question that I am avoiding; it is the question itself that I have no right to treat. I could not treat it without abandoning the conception of primitive men tality which I believe to be in conformity with the facts, the method I have followed from the very beginning of these stud ies, and finally, the results which this method has enabled me to Obtain. Excerpt from Christian Life in the Primitive Church This difficulty will be most felt in questions of literary history. I have been compelled to introduce them; for only so could the sources be systematically valued. On the other hand it would have disordered my work, if I had yielded to the temptation to include a small introduction to the New Testament. The discussion of single problems which I handle in a way special to myself may be possible elsewhere. I trust that the few supplementary notes, especially the last, will be found useful, and the detailed indexes helpful in using the book.
