Excerpt from The Purification of Public Water Supplies: A Comparison in Methods, Cost and Results The fact that the percentage of removal of this abnormally pol luted water is so great, indicates the most excellent results obtained by the process; and the fact that the resulting count in the ozonized water is high in this case should not detract from the method nor be discouraging to the inventor of the process, since in no case will a city be compelled to render potable a supply from such a source. Excerpt from The Filtration of Public Water-Supplies There are three principal methods of securing a good water supply for a large city. The first consists of damming a stream from an uninhabited or but sparsely inhabited watershed, thus forming an impounding reservoir. This method is extensively used in England and in the United States. In the latter most of the really good and large Supplies are so obtained. It is only applicable to places having suitable watersheds within a reason. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Purification of the Washington Water Supply After a very long and careful investigation, the report from the War Department, known as Colonel Miller's report, took the ground that the water supply of the District of Columbia contained suspended clay in such fine particles as to make it practically impossible to use the slow sand system of filtration, and he, therefore, recommended the adoption of the rapid, or mechanical, system of filtration. Excerpt from Second Report of an Investigation of the Rivers of Ohio as Sources of Public Water Supplies, 1899 The public water supply of Bucyrus is badly polluted, and fortunately is held in such low esteem as to be but little, if at all, used for domestic purposes. The filters in use afford no adequate purification of the supply. At Upper Sandusky the river, which has not recovered from its gross pollution at Bucyrus, is again used to receive sewage. While the conditions here are not nearly so bad as at Bucyrus, any increase in the amount of sewage of Upper Sandusky will create a serious nuisance.
