Excerpt from The Princeton Theological Review, 1907, Vol. 5 That any attempt to write the history of the apostolic age without taking account of the life and work of Jesus must prove inadequate will not be denied. For whether we learn of this from Paul or from other sources, it is the fact of the life and work, death and resurrection of Jesus which is the prius of the subsequent history. The resurrection, it is true, is often eliminated from the statement of the factual basis upon which the early Church rested and of which account must be taken by historians of the apostolic age, and in its place is put the belief of the disciples in the resurrec tion. But whatever view be taken of the resurrection of Jesus as narrated in the New Testament, it will be admitted that the history of the apostolic age can not be understood apart from the person of Jesus: what He was, what He did, what He taught, what impression He made on his disciples and what they believed concerning Him. Excerpt from The Harvard Theological Review, Vol. 12 The Harvard Theological Review has been partially endowed by a bequest of the late Miss Mildred Everett, "for the establishment and maintenance of an undenominational theological review, to be edited under the direction of the Faculty of the Divinity School of Harvard University. ... I make this provision in order to carry out a plan suggested by my late father, the Rev. Charles Carroll Everett." During the continuance of The New World, Dr. Everett was on its editorial board, and many of his essays, now collected in the volume entitled Essays, Theological and Literary, appeared first in its pages. Sharing his belief in the value of such a theological review, and in devotion to his honored memory, the Faculty of the Harvard Divinity School, of which he was a member from 1869, and its Dean from 1878 until his death in 1900, has accepted the trust, and will strive to make the Review a worthy memorial of his comprehensive thought and catholic spirit. The Review is edited by a committee of the Faculty of the Harvard Divinity School, consisting of Professors William W. Fenn, Henry W. Foote and Frederic Palmer. Excerpt from The Theological Review, 1875, Vol. 12: A Journal of Religious Thought and Life; Nos. XLVIII.-Li To civilized man the idea of God ari 1ves with instruction, which does but fructify a pre-existing germ. Without in struction, the idea is certainly not developed in the individual mind with the same inevitableness with which the mind develops the idea of sel£ But taking the whole of humanity, we may say that the idea of God is as proper to the race as that of self to the individual. A human being cast from infancy upon absolute solitude, might not have the idea of Divinity in any sense or shape awakened within him. If he did, it would in all likelihood be not the monotheistic idea, but some low form of polytheism or fetishism. Yet even that would be impossible without an innate aptitude for Theism in the soul. Without a prepared niche in human nature, no image occupying the place of Deity and receiving divine honours would ever have been set up. It is idle to talk of fear as possessing this deific power. F ear can make bugbears, but can never convert the bugbear into a God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1991, Vol. 12 Although the doctrine of creation has always had a place in Christian theology, primary if not exclusive attention has been given to the creation of the human Species. That there were other beings created by God was certainly acknowledged, but they were often treated, as Alan Lewis notes, more like Stage props than like important participants in the drama of sal vation whose central protagonists were God and humanity.'
