The Portrait of a Lady is the story of a spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who in affronting her destiny, finds it overwhelming. She inherits a large amount of money and subsequently becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates. The story follows the free-spirited Isabel as she loses her freedom, despite suddenly coming into a great deal of money, and becomes ground in the very mill of the conventional. The Portrait of a Lady is one of James's most popular long novels, and is regarded by critics as one of his finest. Like many of James's novels, it is set in Europe, mostly England and Italy. Generally regarded as the masterpiece of James's early period, this novel reflects James's continuing interest in the differences between the New World and the Old, often to the detriment of the former. It also treats in a profound way the themes of personal freedom, responsibility, and betrayal. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.

Dorian Gray is the subject of a full-length portrait in oil by Basil Hallward, an artist who is impressed and infatuated by Dorian's beauty; he believes that Dorian's beauty is responsible for the new mode in his art as a painter. Through Basil, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, and he soon is enthralled by the aristocrat's hedonistic worldview: that beauty and sensual fulfilment are the only things worth pursuing in life. Newly understanding that his beauty will fade, Dorian expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade. The wish is granted, and Dorian pursues a libertine life of varied and amoral experiences; all the while his portrait ages and records every soul-corrupting sin. Cranford is a beautiful depiction of a close-knit group of ladies in a tiny English village. Through episodic vignettes, we are exposed to a community of genteel ladies, largely elderly and single, who keep their social conventions with graceful economy. The arrival and subsequent death of Captain Brown bring change and challenge their traditional ways. The narrative weaves through tales of love, loss, and resilience, capturing the trials of Miss Matty and her friends as they navigate the complexities of social status and personal tragedy. The novel highlights themes of community support, the impact of industrial change, and the power of kinship and kindness in overcoming life's hurdles. Cranford is modeled on Elizabeth Gaskell's childhood town of Knutsford, Cheshire. First serialized in Charles Dickens' magazine Household Words, Gaskell expanded the work into a full novel with Dickens' encouragement. The narrative's focus on women's experiences in a changing society highlights class distinctions and the impacts of the industrial era. Cranford significantly shaped public perception of the Victorian period through its nostalgic, humorous, and sometimes sentimental depiction of a bygone era. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.
